Starting a new tribe
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 3:57 PMSo I'm trying to come up with some other ways to get this party started. Ha ha, I'm picturing a giant smoke out on the steps of the Supreme Court next to a giant Freedom of Speech rally organised by the Religious Right. Huge Bong Hits for Jesus Banners flying overhead. This issue truly is bigger and more important than minor differences between various subcultures.
Who'd have thought that the Supreme Court would be ruling on a freedom of speech case that started with some kids waving a "Bong hits for Jesus" banner? Truth is stranger than fiction. Do I think Freedom of Speech is important? You betcha! Personally I'm really worried that this right leaning Supreme Court will rubber stamp whatever billious argument the Grand Inquisitor Kenneth Starr comes up with and that we'll lose yet another freedom (seems to be the trend with this particular regime). I'm worried that the further the United States slips back/down the worse things will get for the rest of the world. Not a pretty picture.

Starting a new tribe
I can imagine that the time required to maintain a serious commitment to free speech and recruit new adherents is stressful. I think it is important enough to reach out to young people and get them involved. I have no concrete suggestions about how to go about that but, I support the effort. The erosion of rights under this and other federal administrations seems appalling to me. It's not the US that I thought I was living in as a child.

"It's not the US that I thought I was living in as a child."
It's not the US that I thought I was living in as a child., same here unfortunately. In fact I believe that this current administrations mixing of Church and State does not bode well for the future. Talk about giant steps backwards. The Republicans seem to be willing to say and do anything to get power and then wind up using it in the most egregious ways. Bringing us into a new dark ages... I'm cynical enough to believe that they have no true religious beliefs, that they are just using the true believers as a way to up their numbers. Talk about a deal with the devil. Scarey business if you ask me.
Also what I find real troubling is the lack of any sort of intellectual arguments coming from the right. Everything I've ever read comes down to insulting people on the left and calling them Left Wing or Liberals or something as though that were a bad thing. Needless to say there is a lot more school yard type taunting as well (vulgar stuff I'm not gonna repeat here). Only it always seems to come from people that are old enough to engage in adult conversation... I guess when you can't argue a point effectively you are left with cursing, slander and violence. |
