Rachel is a consummate artist and an inspiration to us all. As a person she is just as wonderful as as she is on stage. This fan hopefully captures some of her exotic style and delightful spirit. The triangle pattern is done in silver leaf by the way - it shines (just like Rachel!). As you can see this piece fits in very well with the geisha theme of my other work, while still being very tribal. I am currently designing things for an Arabian fashion company, so I am shifting towards doing some middle eastern inspired paintings. Perfect for bellydancers...

This is one of my most recent geisha paintings. In case you didn't know this is the first time any of these geisha paintings have been shown publically - I thought I would just bypass the whole gallery scene which has gotten rather stale lately. Ho hum......this site is much more dynamic. A few days ago I learned that a cosmetics company is interested use these designs on their products.

Some of you may wonder how I got started painting geisha. I began them in the 1970's, inspired by the work of American artist Masami Teraoka who, at that time, did some of the most beautiful geisha paintings ever. Since then, he has changed to a different style of painting, but for me, my inspiration was in his early paintings which looked just like woodblock prints. So, in the 1970's, I began painting geishas, but quit in the 80's to study European painting. But, recently when looking at some of my old paintings, I decided to re-explore this old theme realizing the whole idea could be taken further. Look at Masami's early peices at his site: http://www.lava.net/~artbeat/index2.html
I have always loved past cultures with highly stylish, decadent, and intelligent women who were able to cultivate their own power, often existing in societies that did not grant women a lot of freedom. My favorite historical periods are always times of high style and refined aesthetics. The "Floating World" of Japan or the Rococco period in European history are two good examples really stylish periods in art.

I am a classically trained artist and have painted my entire life, ever since the age of five. I have had several amazing teachers over the years including the well known figurative artist Harry Carmean, so stylistically I work in a variety of styles, both European and Japanese. On Facebook new works will periodically be posted plus some never before seen pieces in the hopes that other people find something of interest. Aside from painting traditional paintings, I also like to paint objects such as letter boxes, fans, chairs, teacups, violins and electric guitars. More recently, a series of belly dancer paintings and drawings were begun, initially inspired Rachel Brice, one of the world's finest dancers. So, drop on by now and then for a look at some of my latest pieces.
