Thought Soup
To Infinity and Beyond!
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 3:54 AMGreetings All,
While you were away at the war I was required to choose my next job. I have told this story about three times and I'm writing it down so I don't end up telling it another five times. I was actually really lucky that a friend of mine cares about his career. He watches the assignments homepage and keeps abreast of the latest changes and reads all the propaganda that they spew forth on regular intervals. So my friend stops by my office to ask if I have seen the list.
For the record, I will start reading US propaganda when they start taking it seriously. Where is the United States Office of War Information (OWI) now?
Well, I told him I didn't even know what he was talking about, and he informs me we have 6 days to choose our next job and the list came out yesterday. I love the Army, I really do. The Army is always changing, it forces you to travel, and it keeps you moving so you never get bored; but like any large organization we have communication issues. So I get the list and start marking out the ones I am not eligible for, and I am left with 65 really crapy assignments to choose from. Now friends, I have a nearly unassailably positive attitude, but this list felt like a kick in the nuts. The vast majority of jobs were guaranteed to bring me back to Iraq within a year, and the others were the sort of spirit-breaking drudgery that would make you want to suck start a pistol. After some deliberation and a lot of cussing, I whittled the list down to the five or six of the least miserable choices. I spent 100 of my allotted 120 hours doing web searches to find out about the jobs I had chosen. When I felt I was ready for a fight, I called my assignments officer. I expected to get his answering machine that would give me the digital age's version of the finger with a message that would politely instruct me to go fornicate myself, but here's the funny thing about being me. I am the luckiest son of a bitch I have ever met. Not only did I not get the machine, my assignments officer turns out to be the guy I replaced here in Iraq. Stan, since we are on first name basis now, tells me "don't worry about the list, why don't we send you to school next?" "Oh," I think to myself, "the school that I would love to attend in Kansas that currently shows no vacancies?" I sat there trying to be angry at an unfair system that is currently working in my favor, and failing miserably. It took another minute of chatting and pleasantries, and my future was set for the next 18 months.
So my future schedule with notes follows:
?? NOV 2007: Return to Fort Drum, and commence partying with friends and family
15 DEC 07 - 13 JAN 08: Block leave, uncertain of the activities schedule but the front runners are Divorce court in Florida, or Diving in the Truk islands of Micronesia.
14 JAN 08 - ?? JUN 08: Serve as Brigade S4 (supply officer), complete training for my Hang Gliding level II certification
JUN 08 – JUL/AUG 09: ILE (Intermediate Leaders Course) Fort Leavenworth Kansas, complete my Masters of Logistics Management (yes that is as exciting as is sounds)
JUL 2009 - JUL 2012: Probably be asked to serve over seas, I have my eye on a job in Wiesbaden Germany. I would be the fuel manager for all of Europe. It's a quiet job in a resort town, and I can go see Europe on Uncle Sammy's dime.
JUL 2012- AUG 2014: Cubicle Monkey, HMFIC Poo Flinging Division.
AUG 14: RETIRE; bring on the back tar heroin and Thai Whores
Well, that's my update in a nutshell. It's funny to think that I wasn't on the phone for more than 10 minutes and I mapped out the rest of my career. Now I guess I should give some thought to what I want to do when I grow up. I can’t wait to see you all when I get home.
Take care; be well.
Yours in Service,
Gabriel

Civilian Options:
first off I say go diving, but then again I always say that. =)
Some things you may not find exciting, but with your logistics and supply background might pay real well.. ECOLAB the evil food-service chemical monopoly is bigger than DOW right now and still expanding. They pay exceptionally well 120k + for delivery guys with their own trucks, and even more for logistic delivery people / regional managers. Purchacing Agents for Major (high end) hotels/resorts Working for SANDALS resorts would get you plenty of sun sand and scuba, as well as a decent paycheck from coordinating purchaces of goods and keeping costs down. DUBAI well if you wanted to go to the middle east, but w/out the RPG's the same thing could be done there. The Sultan of DUBAI pays top dollar for qualified people to work in this billionaires vacation paradise, I turned down a good gig there that started at 80k plus room and board, prolly cuz I'm chicken, but If'n yer interested.... |

Wow, thats a lot of schedule and I thought having to plan a month at a time was difficult.
Congratulations on getting the job you wanted! As for planing what you want to do when you grow up: I say , "Don't bother to grow up, it is over rated!" |

Planning Considerations
Several of you have congratulated me on having such a long term plan. I guess I forgot to provide a reference point for my plan. That list is a synopsis of a conversation I had with an assignments officer. Assignment officers are like the "Joe Isuzus" of the Army. That coupled with the fluid nature of my business can pretty much assure me that there is no chance in hell that all or even much of that list will actually happen. In the Army plans change so frequently that we have a saying, "no plan survives first contact."
The only important part of the list is that I really do think I will get the school in Kansas. The rest of the list is little more than a desired course of action. I just wanted to share an odd conversation. It was weird to talk about planning my future out that many years. Xtian, You are dead on the money so to speak. Logistics is not glamorous, but it is lucrative. I hadn't thought of Sandals resort as an employer, but that is a good idea. Yours in Service, Gabriel |

jobs.brassring.com/1033/ASP...etail.aspLong link, but thats to an ECOLAB jobby job. Just to give you an Idea there's PLENTY o work available for you in the civilian sector, espescially with your experience. I say get the extra education if you can, and then retire. Not to thai hookers and booze, (although that does sound fun) but to furthering that same education stateside, I bet you more than qualify for state and federal (as well as military) grants to further your education in logistics or any other related field at an accredited university too boot. Also, you will prolly be able to apply for accelerated programs because of life experience, and be done in 1 1/2 to 2 years, part time. So no missed work or income whilst edumacatin' yerself. Accrediation + your military experience = lotsa moolah. Or hell, use the education and millitary experience to gain investors and loans and go into buisness for yourself, say cruise ship supply coordinating supervisor in aruba. LOL Ya might want to foward a resume to head-hunting services, or have someone foward on your behalf, most of the high paying jobs are not going to be found in the classifieds or on MONSTER, it'll pay to have a jump on things. =) |

School time
Xtian,
Thanks for the link. I actually get job offers fairly regularly. I haven't opened a piece of headhunter mail in years but it just keeps coming. I will definitely use a head hunter given the odd nature of my experience. There are a lot of lucrative jobs in the civilian sector that’s why we can't keep any of our senior logisticians in the Army. Take care brother; be well. Yours in Service, Gabriel |

That is an awesome turn of events!
I'm so happy for you. Does this mean you will be able to come to Pennsic next year? |

Pennsic or Bust
Elijah!
Hey it's great to see you. I will try to work out a way to attend most of the war, but worst case scenario I will have to commute on weekends from Kansas. That's a lot of plane tickets, but after missing Pennsic for two years I will gladly pay to commute. I hope all is well with you and yours. Take care; be well. Yours in Service, Gabriel |
