Night on the Town

Yesterday, James and I went to "Night on the Town" (a local SCA event). We were day tripping, so I guess it was "Day on the Town" for us. The site is fantastic. There is plenty of room for a list field and parking. There is a hall and a roofed patio for feasting and Arts & Sciences. There are even cabins for overnight stays.

The event is mostly about rapier battles, but there is archery and A&S classes too. We enjoyed watching the battles even thogh they seem to be an hour of standing around discussing safety and strategy followed by a few minutes of shouting and frenzied fighting. At one point, a fighter was chasing a combat archer around in circles. The archer could run faster, but was trying to nock an arrow while running. "Yakkity Sax" (the song from Benny Hill) started playing in my head. It was hillarious!

James spent most of his time on the playground which I could oversee from the patio. I talked to Corun about learning to play the Lute; ttended a class on British beers by Misha; talked to Robert Runewald about getting James started in Archery; Aelfgar not only answered my questions about where to get a good crossbow for myself, but also offered to coach me on crossbowmanship; then I discussed brewing a plum malomel for my next batch with Misha and the head of the Atlantia Brewer's Guild.

By then it was getting close to feast time and starting to sprinkle, so James and I called it a day. It has rained all night and all day today, but I hope that the gentles who were there for the whole event enjoyed themselves as much as I did.
