Many folks postulate that Bahrain may very well be the original location of the Garden of Eden. (Assuming you believe it isn't a metaphor.)
I don't suppose there are any archaeological digs on the island? Since I'm still on my Snow Crash kick, I'm curious to know if the Sumerian folks ever conquered the island back in the day....
Not sure how much free time and sway you're getting - but about two hours out of Dubai in UAE (I'm thinking mostly West by Northwest) there were some fabulous 18th century Moorish ruins worth seeing. It turns into a half-day trip really...
