about me
I've been studying Middle Eastern Dance since 2000. I originally started classes in Perth, Western Australia with Belyssa--largely Egyptian and Turkish Oriental-style dancing. I didn't get to spend as much time studying with her as I wish that I could have, but I do credit her still with the strong base that she gave me, the passion I have for this dance and the respect I have developed for its origins.

I moved back to Knoxville in 2001 and continued my dance studies with Alexia. My first recital was with her student troupe in her first Egyptian Nights show at the Fairbanks in 2002.

In 2003 I was diagnosed with Familial Mediterranean Fever(FMF) and dropped out of classes and performing publically for a couple of years. I still danced at home and while out with friends. Life stresses combined with my long-term illness (which had been un-diagnosed up until that time) made practicing and performing very difficult. And still does sometimes, but I refuse to let this make me give up my dance again.

In October 2005 Danika started teaching in Kingston. This was so much closer to home and I was happy to start classes again. I'm currently on hiatus from performing with Danika and her troupe to concentrate on honing my skills within the more traditional Egyptian Oriental style of dance with Sabylla in Knoxville.

I love bellydancing no matter the style--though I do find myself more often than not picking Turkish music (old and new) when I perform solos. I love the passion and spontaniety of the Turkish style of dance. I've also fallen in love with the folkloric dances of Turkey. My dance name, Hülya, is Turkish in origin and means "a sweet thought or dream." It's my dream to travel to Turkey someday with Artemis or Eva's tours so that I can experience the culture of the dance first hand.

My Recent Activity

European Tapestries, Middle Eastern Kilims and Appalachian Quilts (blog entry) I have posted on my blog before about my recently re-discovered ancestry, my medical condition, and my dabbling in geneaology and dna testing. I thought I'd share one of my recent efforts--dancing has been impossible due to a flair up of FMF so a ... read more

Turkish Dance and YouTube--lots of unfair critiques (blog entry) I lose so much time to YouTube surfing video clips. One leads to another, to another, to another and two hours later I realize I've spent too much time there.

One irritating thing that I've noticed is that there are several clips of Turkish-sty... read more

Waiting Impatiently--updated finally (blog entry) Okay, I've had these results for quite some time now, but life has been a bit crazy so I haven't taken the time to update my blog here.

My Blog

I have posted on my blog before about my recently re-discovered ancestry, my medical condition, and my dabbling in geneaology and dna testing. I thought I'd share one of my recent efforts--dancing has been impossible due to a flair up of FMF so a girl has to do something to keep herself busy.

This is written from my mother's perspective, but I am the author. The by-line reads Phyllis and Julia Starnes; however, it could more correctly read Phyllis with Julia Starnes. It is told from a firs... read more

I lose so much time to YouTube surfing video clips. One leads to another, to another, to another and two hours later I realize I've spent too much time there.

One irritating thing that I've noticed is that there are several clips of Turkish-style dance that have critiques posted to them such as "she's hopping, not dancing", "this isn't belly dance", "what's she doing? that's not belly dance" etc. etc.

Obviously the people posting these comments are making their determinations based on s... read more

For those of my friends here that noticed that the name on my profile has changed--or for those that suddenly have someone on their friends list that they can't remember adding--let me explain that after 7 years at dancing I have finally chosen a "dance name."

If I were working professionally and depended upon my name recognition for a living I certainly wouldn't consider this at this point. But for performing locally in festivals and such it shouldn't matter that much. It might only matte... read more

Okay, I've had these results for quite some time now, but life has been a bit crazy so I haven't taken the time to update my blog here.

The DNA Ethnotyping Report matches DNA markers against current world populations. The European data base is separate from the rest of the world and results are not necessarily ranked by level--i.e. it can't say that you are more of this than that or the other.

My top world matches were as follows:

1. Lumbee (Native American)
2. Caucasian
3. Catala... read more

Yesterday was my birthday. I took my daughter out to a free concert--Joan Jett and the Black Hearts. We had a great time. At eight she's a little young to fully appreciate momma's music, but she did recognize "I Hate Myself for Loving You" Some new generation band has covered it. Oh well.

I'm rather impatiently waiting for my gift from my parents to come in the mail. Of course, once I get it it's only going to mean more waiting. Why? My mother bought me a DNA test kit for my birthday. I'm ... read more
