Missouri Platform of the Libertarian Party: Education

   Mon, April 20, 2009 - 8:40 AM
The Missouri Libertarian Party favors the restoration of public schools to local control. When we say that, we favor the abolition of the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. We also believe that there should be a school by school advisory board of parents that would help to design curricula that is specific to the needs of the area. We favor removing all restrictions on home schooling except the duty to test on standard tests. It is apparent from the success of charter schools and private schools that we should move to the privatization of the government schools. Voucher systems are fairer than the system we have now and should be used to allow parents to choose the education of their children, but they should be phased out for those who can afford to send their children to school. There is no need for Federal Education mandates and State Education Mandates should reflect the needs of business and colleges and not be tied to some artificially created State Board of Education mandate.

The education of children is not a Federal responsibility and should be ended. There is nothing in the Federal Constitution about education and therefore the US Department of Education should be abolished.
