The Good Things About Winter

   Sat, February 24, 2007 - 11:59 AM
This weekend is our local winter carnival.

All week, Scouts volunteers have been out making 20 huge blocks of snow in preparation for this weekend. Luckily the bone chilling weather of the last few weeks has given way to some milder temperatures along with clouds and a bit of snow.

So, today, we had a professional snow artist come out and show carnival attendees how to do snow sculptures.

This one my daugther and a Scout friend made with some help from the expert. It took about 3 hours to get it juuuust right... I like how the sculptor says you just have to envision the shape in the snow and just take away whatever doesn't belong :-) Sounds easy. Sure.

There ARE some fun things you can only do with snow....

Great photo! And thanks for putting the positive spin on winter.

I have heard soapstone sculptors, say pretty much the same thing about their art -- that the form or shape already exists in the lump of stone they start with. It's an almost spiritual endeavour to figure out what it is and essentially unleash it.
