Martinus was born November 11, 500, I was named for St. Martin, for November 11 is St. Martin's day. My father is Nicolaus and my mother Felicitas. Nicolaus is an Imperial Senator now, but, when I was born, he was a general - commander of the 3rd Imperial Legion.
When I was young, father taught me many things about the army, but more about being Romaioi. At the age of seven years, my brother was born. Father had him castrated so that he might serve high in the Empire someday. I asked if he had done the same to me, and was told that our family is of an Imperial line and that I might be in a position to become Emperor someday. But, I could not take that position as a eunuch.
At father's guidance, I excelled in my education and surpassed most of my classmates. I attended the University at Constantinople when I was 16 years. I studied History, Philosophy, Astronomy, Military Theory, and Rhetoric.
When I was 18 years, I entered the Army in the Comitatenses. I was stationed as a ducenarius in Niceae. I spent two years there until I was moved to the Persian border. We moved around a lot there and fought pitched battles and a great campaign under the great General Belisarius.
When I was 22 years, I was assigned to the School of Protectors and, as a Protector, was inducted into the Scholae. In the next year I was made a Tribunus. Two years later I was given command of one-third of the 2nd Imperial Legion and the rank of Comes.
I also took my first wife, Rainault, that year and later had my son, Coemgen. She was in import from Briton and was very lively.
In my 26th year, my father sent word to me that Lucius had been killed in battle and that his business was being plagued by brigands. He asked me to come to his aid. So, I left the army and went back to Constantinople.
It took almost a year, but we finally built up a small fleet of ships that were large enough to carry a complement of marines. This kept the brigands away for good. Then, instead of returning to the Army, I began an import/export business. Along with father's ships, we have made quite a profit in spice, gold, wheat and slave trading.
At 30, my first wife was lost at sea. She had gone to Alexandria at the request of relatives.... and had left while I was away. Three years later, I bought a Greek slave, Phoibe at the market she has been with me as leader of the house ever since.
I have begun living almost exclusively at my villa in the country now. But the business is running well. Father's health is poor and he has retired from public office leaving me the entire family business and a seat in the Senate. I don't travel as much as I would like due to the demands of office, but I still enjoy any opportunity to travel the world in search of wonders to bring to my Emperor, Justinian.
I have just purchased a Bishopric over the town of Sykai and surrounding territories. I hope to use this influence to guide the people here to greatness. I am in the process of building a new church in the town square. We have needed one for quite some time.
My household is thriving. Domus Draco Byzantios has never been so active. I have recently made an alliance with another Great House - House Leatherwolf. And, so, I have expanded my own house. I now have the many clients to whom I am patron and that takes much of my time.
But, I am always willing to come to the service of Rome and the Emperor.

Did I mention I hate my job? Hm?
It's not really the job. I like teaching.
It's not even the schedule as much as the way they run the business.
And it's not even the way they run the business as much as they way the screw around with my pay!
They've changed the pay structure - AGAIN!
When I was hired, they presented me with a pay scale and schedule of advancement based upon the IT certifications I had combined with what I would be achieving while I worked here. They've changed th...

It all started last week when I only felt crappy on Wednesday. Then I taught class on Thursday and Friday against my better judgement. By Friday night I had absolutely no energy. Saturday morning saw me awakening due to a fever of around 104 which broke periodically through the day but always seemed to come back with vengence. The fever was accompanied by much pain, coughing, dehydration, sneezing, and chills. When it broke there was much sweating and even more pains.
My wonderful wife di...

A thread on the trivia tribe sparked me to ask some questions. I don't know the answers.....I think they are different for everyone.
What do you say about a culture that celebrates the date of someone's death as opposed to their birth?
What makes a culture more excited about celebrating people they have never and will never meet rather than the most important people in their daily lives?
What is it that makes us want to allow the day of our own birth, or other personally important eve...

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite. He told the group to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee ...

A thread in another tribe got me thinking about my favorite quote from Robert Heinlein, so I thought I'd post it here. It is very much in line with the way I've grown up.
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook ...
