Wolfie's Life
Why I love spartans
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 5:13 PMCombine that with my love of frank miller's visions and artwork, and let me just say I couidn't wait to go see the movie "300".
Now, I know its not for everyone. I loved it. I love the story, I loved the style, I loved how over the top the costumes were.
One thing I love is that it's emotionally honest. By that I mean, you have a 8 foot tall giant cut loose from his bonds to be a vicious weapon of the persians. In real life, the guy probably wasn't that tall. But to a person alive at the time, it would have seemed like some 6 foot 5 bruiser was 8 feet tall.
The thing I totally love though is that 300 is all about freedom, and refusing to kneel before anyone.
The funny thing? Ancient Sparta. 10% of the population, free men. the other 90% of the population? Slaves. Yeah. Thats right.
Now go watch the movie and be inspired by their "cry freedom!" attitude. Yeahhhhh.... those evil persians enslaving everyone. It was really all just one power trip anywhere you looked.
Even with that, the greeks still managed to invent modern math, calculus, geometry, oh and the musical scales we use today.
The ancient world was a facinating place, I have to say. Greeks really did culture like no one else. Had they gotten over being city states, and formed into a nation, who knows what the world would look like,

Thanks for the big ups. I have Spartan blood in me and am a descendant of one of the Maidens or Caryatids statues on the Acropolis. (insert goddess and gay jokes here)

I love you, Wolfie, and I love that you are writing in your blog. I also love being right.
Algebra was invented by Arabs. Calculus was invented by either an Englishman or a German, depending on who you talk to. And because I know you love to be right too, The greeks are pretty much responsible for Geometry. And 300 kicked some ass. ;) |

10% freemen was pretty progressive back in that day and age.
what i liked was they were fighting for the right to kill retarded babies. babies that xerxes would've otherwise embraced. |

<<Algebra was invented by Arabs.
Calculus was invented by either an Englishman or a German, depending on who you talk to.>> And zero was invented by Hindus. Wolfie, that was very bad journalism. |

just an f-y-i
I did not stay attached to the dialogue, it indeed was more about the visuals esp. on the battlefield sequences....
talk about a wave of bodies. so you know, my sweetness did a lot of "tweeking" on that script, although he was writer #19 or #20 of the 22 that were mixed into what you saw on screen. studios just have a hard time NOT fucking with a work of art - like any writer's work can be. oh well, it paid the bills. did you see GHOST RIDER? that is a better example (although where did the plot go after the first 40 min, huh?) |
