The Medicine Woman`s Roots

In the process of becoming familiar with herbalism, it’s easy to feel confused by jargon that, while clearly obvious to those using it, tends towards being something of an insider’s tongue. This can cause beginners to feel alienated from group discussion that could be educational and intimidated by what should be common sense concepts. Because [...]

There’s another storm moving in. The river’s just got back to a nearly normal level, and the nights have been bitterly cold. Rhiannon is outside dancing for snow, because like most Southwestern children, she never tires of the fun of fluffy, wet white stuff falling out a cool, dark sky. Surely an unusual and beautiful [...]

Another excerpt from Loba’s Enchanted Pantry, written in the days before I knew that garlic and tomato sauce both do strange things to my belly. It is fabulously yummy though, so enjoy an extra bowl for me Oh, and for those of you who requested a copy of the cookbook, I’m in the process [...]

Nearly every day I receive a half a dozen emails from blog readers. Some of these are beautiful letters of appreciation. Many of these emails are queries regarding health, either their own, their families or their pets. Although I have tried to reply to these when I can, I am no longer able to answer [...]

Wild Rose Elixir 1 pint jar enough fresh wild rose petals to fill the jar everclear or vodka/brandy to fill the jar 3/4 (I prefer a lower proof alcohol for this preparation, I might make a 50% solution with water and everclear) glycerine or raw honey to fill the jar 1/4 (I generally prefer glycerine for first aid purposes [...]

February’s blogparty is appropriately, all about herbal aphrodisiacs. Also appropriately, it’s being hosted by Ananda of the Plant Journeys blog and Amrita Apothecary, who creates some of the most sensual creams and elixirs I’ve ever tried. In fact, I would suggest anyone who’s not into making their own valentine gifts, immediately go and purchase some [...]

I mentioned in a previous post that jim talks about how Slippery Elm helps prevent herbal oils from going rancid. Well, another thing I’ve noticed is that Elm bark in infusions keeps them from going bad, for days and days…. I recently drank a five day old infusion (I don’t have refrigeration so it was [...]

Pasque Flower is a powerful plant, with some truly remarkable abilities. First, let me clarify that there are several different species of Anemone that can be used interchangeably, and some have overlapping names. For the record, the species I am aware of being effective in medicinal use (and again, some of these are different names [...]

We have internet again! It took a new satellite and service to make it work, but it’s up now. Course now there’s no sunlight for solar power but I should still be able to catch up and post a bit more regularly.

I’ve had steadily worsening blood sugar swings over the past few years despite a high quality/low carb diet, daily nourishing herbal infusions and being in good shape. My blood sugar swings resulted in fatigue, nausea, mood swings, dizziness and other unpleasantness. And no matter how carefully, or how often, I ate, it just got worse. [...]

about me
Anima Medicine Woman, Mother, Poet and Barefoot Devotee to the Sweet Medicine Canyon. I'm a river and a wild thing, with a history as deep and strange as the mountains I'm married to. I live in a little cabin on a mesa, I sleep under the stars and grow weeds in a garden made of volcanic stone, mountain soil and the blessings of myriad bacteria.

I and my partners, Wolf and Loba, run a small Wildlands Sanctuary and Women's Center. We host events, give counsel, plant Willow trees and teach healing as wholeness to anyone we can get to sit still long enough to listen ;)

I regularly teach workshops and host events on Sacred Plant Medicine, The Medicine Woman Way, native plants of the Southwest and women's spirituality. I also teach correspondence courses on the Medicine Woman Tradition, Herbalism and others.
