So, I’m currently swamped finishing up the websites (I keep thinking I’m done and then catch a few more things that need work) and barely maintaining my load of emails, so I haven’t been able to write anything for the blog in the last few days, as much as I’d have liked to. I think [...]

We’re blessed to have a large number of students these days, and as you can imagine the people that we attract tend to be individualistic, freedom loving, intensely feeling and deeply sensitive. Additionally, a great many of them are writers, photographers and artists (among other things) resulting in some amazing creative outlets for their studies [...]

With the huge number of herb books available locally and internationally in the english language, I was amused (and a little alarmed) by the fact that when I sat down to write this list, I could only come up with a few that I’d really recommend to my readers. The books I have chosen are [...]

The fall of snow can be hypnotic in its rhythm and flow - it’s movement something out of a dream you can’t forget… After alternately pouring and drizzling for days, the water falling at a sharp angle and sometimes blowing in horizontal sheets, it’s finally let up. Outside, everything has grown suddenly quiet and there’s [...]

ORIGIN mid 18th cent.: from Latin demulcent- ‘stroking caressingly,’ Demulcents are herbs that contain noticeable amounts of a carbohydrate (a polysaccharide, actually) called mucilage that moistens, cools heat, lessens inflammation and often stimulates local immune response. It was once thought that demulcents could only effect the surfaces they came in contact with, but it is now [...]

Aromatics are easy to spot. Their strong signature aromas and tastes are dead giveaways. In fact - technically- aromatic is a taste, not an action. The proper action here should likely be labeled carminative (aromatic digestive herbs, generally). However, this action seems to have gotten pigeon-holed as only those herbs which release gas, and that’s [...]

My version of pastilles are little balls of herbal powder held together by something sweet. They’re ideal for sore throats but can be used as a tasty dose of herbal medicine for many different issues, including belly troubles, anxiety or any number of other things. My original recipe came from the wonderful Herbal Home Remedy [...]

about me
Anima Medicine Woman, Mother, Poet and Barefoot Devotee to the Sweet Medicine Canyon. I'm a river and a wild thing, with a history as deep and strange as the mountains I'm married to. I live in a little cabin on a mesa, I sleep under the stars and grow weeds in a garden made of volcanic stone, mountain soil and the blessings of myriad bacteria.

I and my partners, Wolf and Loba, run a small Wildlands Sanctuary and Women's Center. We host events, give counsel, plant Willow trees and teach healing as wholeness to anyone we can get to sit still long enough to listen ;)

I regularly teach workshops and host events on Sacred Plant Medicine, The Medicine Woman Way, native plants of the Southwest and women's spirituality. I also teach correspondence courses on the Medicine Woman Tradition, Herbalism and others.
