about me
Me? Mostly a laid back guy that really has been into the music since waaaay back....now comes the third person, non- personal stuff...
The Black Audio Device originally formed in 1989 in the scenic college town of Bozeman, Montana, and was later recognized as being the originators of Bozeman's (if not the state!) "Modern Dance" scene.
Starting with the desire to bring a taste of what he had heard and seen in Scotland and Europe, AKA Zandar began actively promoting the beat by organizing "raves" and developing the first techno/Industrial-themed show on KGLT 91.9 FM, one of the largest radio station in Montana. The fledgling "Black Audio Device" also provided the populace with quality music though it's CD-import sales, and eventually expanded to include Graphic Design and Digital Sound editing.
After a limited run of "minor" successes in the mid 90's involving a few remixes for (no longer!) fledgling artists and a few "for promotion use only" remix companies, AKA Zandar decided to relocate his endeavors to the rain-sodden domain of Portland, Oregon. This was more in keeping with his newfound Anti-Solid precipitation policy, and (even more so!) in keeping with his native climate of Krebulak Minor.
Today, the "Device" provides Studio and Mac-based production facilities, and DJ/Live performances throughout the greater PDX area. I've shitcanned the "graphic design solutions" aspect of the biz in favor of doing more artsy- fartsy things in order to pleasure my inner child(but I will toss out a flyer or image if asked nicely). Let's talk!
Oh, and I really like cats, if that adds to the profile....
For the last week, I have more than likely been driving my myspace "friends" bonkers with the following request:
MEMORIAL FOR MY DECEASED BAND PARTNER SPITTER
For the NEXT WEEK ONLY, I will be turning my page into a Memorial for my cat Spitter, who passed away last year on March 9, 2007 from complications caused from being born with Feline Leukemia. He was a good cat, my first pet, and a constant presense in the studio, contributing hairballs, oddly placed noises in my compositions, and "supreme Protector of all things Electrical". All that, and he still had time to double as "Supreme Lap Warmer"!
Shortly after his death, I posted this note with the hopes that it might raise a little awareness concerning animal stewardship, and how a few BASIC and RESPONSIBLE actions (or lack of) could have a long standing impact on that little fuzzy dependent’s existence. In Memorium, I would like to post them again, at theone year mark, with the same hopes.
The following is an e-mail I sent to my brother March 10, 2007. I think it about says it all:
Dad said he would call you about it. Spitter looked bad when I got back from work at 7:30 pm, but he was still scratching himself. When I fed him, he ate a little of his beef baby food, and then just stayed there. I called my neighbor over- an elderly gentlemen who has had cats most of his life - just to confirm what I had already thought: No more tests, it was time. He told me not to take any more pictures, but I did anyway, a few group shots with his buddy.
I baby-sat him for the rest of the evening, he curled up on my chest as I fooled around on the computer, occasionally crawling off or complaining when I moved him. When I took a break, I gave him his med’s and water (at about 2 am), and stayed up to about 3 or 330. By then he had gotten much worse, he had already staggered off to my bed and crawled under the covers. I didn’t have the heart to move him, so I set the alarm for 0730 for his vet appt. - he was going to be going to the vet at 8-ish for tests anyway --so I kind of perched on the edge of the mattress for a nap.
Anyway, I woke up at about 0720 as he crawled out from under the covers. I thought that he was doing better until I turned over and saw he had thrown up the pills I had given him almost totally undigested (there was even one from the day before) and he was just lying there, sprawled on the blankets. Before I got up, he dragged himself back to me, his rear legs refusing to work, and crawled up close to me up and started to shiver badly and to make yowly plainitive noises. I petted him for a bit, told him he was a "good kitty", and he seemed to calm down (or at least he stopping making those sounds). I think I said it was time to "go", and I got up and left FOR JUST A FEW MINUTES (to get Martin to say bye before he went- he was up on top of the cabinets totally stressed I think). I came back, and Spitter had "gone".... I must have missed him by seconds.
We were at the vet in about 2 minutes. I met the technician as she came in for the day, she let me in before they opened, and then she checked for a heartbeat- no dice-and confirmed what I already knew (but I had to be sure). I said goodbye, and she then took the little guy away.
I guess the reason I am going into such detail is because I don’t think I could ever say this: HE WENT DOWN hard. I feel that in the end he was in pain, and he didn’t deserve that. He was such a good little guy, and a fighter... I suppose I just didn’t want to let go until the end, and then it happened so fast there was nothing I could do to stop the suffering..
The last day was just not worth it- I don’t think it would be for anyone. It was just frigging selfish. It just didn’t SEEM like he WAS in pain (he was out chasing stuff around outside just the day before), but he probably was and just hid it well from us lowly humans. I think even Martin knew what was coming, I just didn’t want to listen. Over. Done. I suppose I shouldn’t beat myself up about it, but I can and probably will.......
Will call later, doing OK , figuratively, z
The above E-mail was not fabricated. Spitter was a feral rescue cat, but was born with Feline Leukemia, a death sentance that could have been avoided with a simple vaccination. He was an indoor cat, but enjoyed being out a little when I sat outside with my morning coffee. He survived his litter -mates and family by a good 3 years, but unfortunately, my cat happened to be one of 36 that was to pay the price for their owner’s ignorance or laziness. Or so I thought it was 36 cats - it gets even better....
I later found out from my brother and his wife( who runs the Spay /Neuter clinic in Whitefish, MT) that I had made a mistake in my account of the situation. It hadn’t been 36 cats under that trailer, it HAD BEEN OVER 200 CATS FROM ( ACCORDING TO THE OWNER) POSSIBLY THE SAME BREEDING PAIR AND THEIR OFFSPRING!
it took 4 entire days to sterilize the ones that were living, and remove them from the site. What a mess.....I got one of the "lucky ones" that had beaten the odds to see daylight, a decent meal, and even become "the last man standing". When I heard this, I immediately began to wonder about the concentration of lead in his trailer’s paint, or the possibility that the person responsible may have somehow survived a severe case of Fetal Alcohol Posioning. It still pisses me off......
So there you have it. If you or someone you love has a pet that they care for, please take a moment to copy this, give it to friends with pets, or repost with these final thoughts:
1.Please spay or neuter your pets- No one "needs" or can care for THIRTY OR MORE cats living under a trailer! "Collecting" animals does not "save" them-most of the time, it is condemning them to a life of unintentional ill-treatment. You can donate your time and efforts to an animal rescue agency as an alternative, and be appreciated by worker and animal alike!
2. Keep your pet’s vaccinations current.
3. When the time is near, don’t allow your "Little Guy" to suffer needlessly.
The original posting was followed with a request that it be copied and placed in the Bulletin section of their myspace page. I had hoped that people would find the message worthwhile and it would spread much like any of the other "chainmail messages" that assault the myspace user on a reguar basis. The upshot? 5 reposts, 2 of them from total strangers (one of these was from Moonsun records!), 2 from friends that I had pointed it out to and asked them to do it, and 1 that picked it up and did it almost instantly. It was a definite learning experience, all told........
