Watch For Cairns - aka katuah's LJ

packing for SF trip, leaving in just a bit. i used to love flying - especially when i could watch out the window, see the landscape rolling, the clouds, the lights at night... now, it's become so much of a chore, its hard to enjoy.

the last time i took a trip by myself was almost two years ago, now. although i'm gonna miss the Bean like mad, it will be nice to have nothing in my head but my own stuff for a few days. i'm hoping to catch up with some old friends out there during the week... and maybe a few new ones, too. [info]myelectricsheep, are we still on for Thursday night? If not, let me know - maybe instead we could just go run around town one afternoon taking pictures! SF is a great city for that kind of thing. Anybody else is free, just let me know.

hm. weather channel says 64 and sunny. truly wtf weather for SF.

when i went inside yesterday, there were about three or four little bean-head plants poking up in the sewn rows. when i got up and went outside this morning, there were about thirty or forty little baby bean, corn, and squash plants. In one night! Yay! As of right now, between the plants acquired at the Farmer's Market, the garden store, and those i planted seeds for, too, the two raised beds are totally full to overflowing. i hope it's true that squash, beans, and corn grow well together, or else i'm in trouble. that's what it mostly is, except for some broccoli & peppers, and a few heirloom tomatoes for sauce-making.

I'm building more raised beds, which will get a late crop of potatoes, greens, and carrots planted, hopefully before i leave for SF next week, or at least shortly thereafter. This year is something of a giant experiment - what grows well here? what withers and dies? - with my only goals being success at eating *something* from my garden every month starting in May, and if I'm lucky, to break even somewhat(not counting the cost of the dirt or building the beds, just the cost for plants and seeds).

I spent nearly the whole weekend outside - I'm damn lucky not to be sunburnt. the bean loves "ow-siiiide" too, even more now that we got her a sand & water table (might as well have just been a water table - who cares about sand?).plus, she's picked all the berries within toddler reach off the nandinas, and is working on the hollies now. no child left inside here.

i find it difficult to be too depressive when spring rain is greening everything. this is the best time to be here, i think - the autumn was my fave in the mtns, but spring is definitely best here in the eastern piedmont. the sauna-like heat hasn't set in yet. by August I'll be dreaming of Alaska. or at least the desert, where sweat does some good.
