In the garden, fall carrots are sprouting, and broccoli & spinach are leafing up. plus, we're still getting tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. at this rate, the late crop may be coming in by the time the early crop finishes for good. this garden year has been exciting, and i think a good point of connection with my partner. she wants us to eat better and be more healthy, and a garden bursting with fresh veggies is a great way to link her energies with my OMGPeakOil freakouts in a constructive way. the cost of store-bought stuff is helping too - six bucks for a tiny container of blueberries really emphasizes the value of having your own bushes, or at least making the most out of the "pick-your-own" farm trips. i'm seeing a chest freezer in our near future.

i just realized, i need some gardening/permaculture icons. hm.

Impermanence.

Rain, soft rain, harder rain, Navajo male rain, rain like angry ent spirits beating on the wall. Drought watch says there's still not enough groundwater. But there will never be enough groundwater, just like there would never be enough oil, or enough air. I watch the clouds gathering over Duke East quad, as the symphony plays movie themes and the kids run back and forth, laughing. In Cuba, the crops are flattened. In New Orleans, immigrants hide from the buses, more afraid of the INS than of 20-foot storm swells. In Minneapolis, someone's door is broken by men in armour. And then, there or elsewhere, someone's faith in the future is broken. I ponder my new-old tattoo, the folly of ink in mortal flesh, the message of a design made in crops or sand or digital patterns in the aether. And what of music, dance, love?

We make what we can of the world, while we can. What else is there?
