Earth mage, plant woman

I hitch-hiked to Arizona in 1975 and landed in Arivaca early in that year. I stayed, bought land, homesteaded, raised a family and lots of animals, started a community newspaper, studied herbs, local wild plants, permaculture and many other adventures over the years. Networking within and without my local community seems to be the binding theme overall.

After a one week break where everything got to dry out from the 11" of rain so far this summer, the rain came back yesterday. It was refreshing and needed by the wilting plants. This morning the mosquitos seem revived as well. What a fabulous contrast to last winter/spring when we were gasping for water and something green! Gathering seeds of wildflowers should be easy soon.
No time for another hike this week. Been busy downsizing my 'stuff' in preparation for a real adventure next year - wh... read more

Went out early this morning for a hike in Fraquita Canyon west of my place several miles. The road to access the canyon is Tres Bellotas Road, which runs from Ruby Rd. to the Mexican border south of Arivaca - all dirt of course. It takes you right past that surveillance tower I wrote about previously. Pinkerton's man was sitting in his truck looking bored when we went by.
There was an inch more of rain this week so I thought it would be a good time to check out the water and summer flowerin... read more

It is 12 miles north of the border is proposes to monitor, one mile from the town of Arivaca, AZ, and can "see" 9 miles. You figure it out... As I write, the airforce jets are circling in their practice of war, disturbing my peace. Last night the Border Patrol helicopters flew low over my home doing several passes, obstensibly searching for illegal border crossers. There is a Wacken... read more

The desert has been magically transformed to lush greenness and my world is now humid and wildly teaming with summer life. On my morning walk through the hills near my home I often find something to bring back with me. Yesterday it was fish. Fish? Yes, I meant it when I said this desert has transformed - there was water and fish where before it was crackly dry. Quite a change from dry bones and grasses.
My love for this valley embraces all life and I am always amazed at what it holds. The cu... read more
