Going way back in the genealogical record, both sides of my family have been made up of eccentrics, misfits, barbarians, crazies, members of secret societies and circus folk. Why my mom's family decided to settle in Utah is beyond me - it's a weird place, but a hard place to be weird. I grew up in two worlds - the one my crazy, bohemian family inhabited and the straight-laced Mormon society of Salt Lake City, where you can get in legal trouble for carrying a boom box down main street or having two beers in front of you at the same time...
