Help Create Social Justice in Tibet
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 4:45 PMBeing far from the streets of Lhasa, the ability to proactively influence China’s respect for human rights in Tibet may seem limited. However, the interconnectedness of our global village allows and begs our participation. Please consider two easy actions that can collectively make a formidable contribution to the creation of social justice in Tibet and to the greater prospect of global human rights.
1. Avaaz.org is compiling a petition on behalf of human rights in Tibet and aims to deliver 1,000,000 signatures to China’s leadership. You can sign it here:
www.avaaz.org/en/tibet_end_the_violence/
and you can check out their mission here:

2. If Wal-Mart were its own country, it would be China’s 4th largest trading partner. Out of 6,000 Wal-Mart suppliers, 80% are located in China. Wal-Mart has a very close relationship with China and thus is in a position to exert influence over its leadership. As consumers we, in effect, vote for the type of world we want to live in through the values that are represented in the products and services we buy. When we collectively and intentionally unite our consumption around values we support, we change the world.
Please write an email to help@walmart.com and ask Lee Scott and the board of Wal-Mart to formally and publicly request that China respect human rights, end the violence in Tibet, and begin meaningful negotiations with the Dalai Lama.
Feel free to use this letter, or write your own:
To Lee Scott and the Board of Wal-Mart,
I am writing today to request that you engage with China’s leadership and formally and publicly request that China respect human rights, end the violence in Tibet, and begin meaningful negotiations with the Dalai Lama.
By continuing business as usual with China, Wal-Mart expresses complacency in the face of brutality. As a consumer I feel that if I were to shop at Wal-Mart I would be implicitly sanctioning injustice in Tibet. I can not, in good conscience, shop at Wal-Mart while the current state of affairs in Tibet remain unaddressed.
………………………
By acting together we can co-create a peaceful and just world. I invite you to participate, and please forward this on to your networks.
