Where I'm At

Where did all the story tellers go?

I was watching a special on PBS tonight about the LIFE photographers. One section of the program delt with the "World as Community" show. One of the pictures chosen for this show was an aboriginal elder telling stories to a group of children

The photo made me think. Where did all the story tellers go? The storytellers were the heart of society. They told the myths that taught us history and ethos of our people. The storyteller picked his tale to suit what approiate for the group at that time.

Today television tells plenty of stories, true. But those stories are usually based on what we WANT to hear rather than what we NEED to hear. There are those that claim they have what we need to hear. By what standard do they make that claim? I'm sure not following the standard of a Swaggert or other TV evangelist. There are people out there who believe that they must save me.

I want that storyteller to be from MY tribe. My beliefs, my standards, my mythology. But I don't have a storyteller. Know anyone who can teach me that skill?
