Largely speaking, she's a medium

Ogden woman shares her gift

OGDEN -- Shiksa Yisrael parked her car in the number 13 stall at the Farmer's Market in Ogden, set up her station and waited for business.

It was slow, so Yisrael moved her car to a different spot and sprinkled salt around it.

Business picked up.

"I'm superstitious," said the 33-year-old strawberry blonde Ogden psychic. "As soon as I moved the car it got real busy."

A line of people started forming. A 12-year-old girl from Washington Terrace asked Yisrael if she would do well in school this year.

"You need a good luck charm," she told the girl. "Take it out and feel it when you get worried and feel stressed and it will help you. Know that you don't have to fix everything. I'll bet you're a Virgo."

The girl said she was indeed a Virgo, took the charm, asked a couple of more questions and left.

Yisrael likes to stay busy, she said, and on most days that's exactly what she is. She recently did tarot card and psychic readings at Hastings's Books and the Megaplex 13 during the opening of the new Harry Potter movie. The line to see her was just as long as the line of people waiting to get in to see the movie, she said. She's also worked at Weber State University and the Bookshelf in Ogden.

She makes house calls, does readings over the phone and also in her home. She said she's also a medium and speaks to the dead. She doesn't charge for her services, but asks for a fair donation instead to help support herself and her four children, two of whom are special needs.

Yisrael said she's always had psychic abilities.

As a child, she would know when a woman was pregnant before the woman herself knew. She has had dreams and premonitions about people and events, including 9/11, she said.

In the coming year she said she predicts a severe mudslide in South America involving children on a school bus, Queen Elizabeth's death, which will happen in much the same way as Princess Diana's, and a politician's sexual orientation will come out either after he is dead or because he is ill.

However, she prefers to tell people what is going on in their life right now, rather than what will happen four years from now.

She said giving predictions far into the future serves as a way to not be accountable for advice.

She said a true psychic can stand on her "sight" and know that it will be put to the test right away.

"Last year, I was watching fireworks with my children when I suddenly felt we should go in the house. As we reached the steps, one of the Wyoming fireworks misfired and shot into the spot where we were sitting," she said.

"A year and a half ago, I had a dream that my home had a carbon monoxide leak.

"I called the gas company and told them that I had a dream that we had a problem with the water heater. They came out and in fact, yes, we had a carbon monoxide poisoning."

About five years ago, Yisrael went to a local psychic who told her she had the gift. She said many of her friends had been to this same psychic but were never told they had psychic abilities.

"I figured she might be legitimate," she said. "I went to the library and checked out a book on tarot and cut out flimsy little pieces of paper and wrote the names of each card on them.

"I could see right away. I needed to practice, so I went on the 'Net and had hundreds of strangers call me and I would read for them over the phone. That's how I tuned my gift."

Yisrael said she is not a fortune teller, but an empathic healer.

"Anyone can read cards. They come with a book. Nine out of 10 readers do it as such. However, one out of 10 is different. Special. I have the ability to peer into another's soul and see the secrets therein," she said.

"I can see that a person had an abortion or was molested or any other deed that is weighing their soul down, and why and how such an act has affected their view of God and themselves. Then we work on that."

Yisrael said she doesn't mince words with her clients. She tells them everything, including the bad and ugly.

"I tell people everything. I have heard from other readers that one should only tell the tea and crumpets stuff. Listen, they didn't come to me for crap. They come to me for the truth. They can get crap from their mother," she said. "If I tell you that you will die in Bermuda, don't go there."

Dorothy Kettering, of Ogden, said she knows from personal experience that Yisrael is an authentic psychic and an intuitive card reader.

"I have introduced her to the Wasatch Business Development group here in Ogden ,and they absolutely loved her. Also, my neighbor next door had a particular situation and was puzzled regarding an acquaintance and Shiksa was right on and helped her through the stress of the problem," Kettering said.

"My neighbor was so appreciative that she brought another friend to Shiksa and also got a right-on target reading for that friend.

"She takes a long time and uses several decks to make sure of her answers to the person requesting the reading," Kettering said.

"She never asks for a certain amount of money and lets people pay whatever they feel it was worth. I have seen most people give willingly $20. So that to me means they really appreciated her reading and it was more than satisfactory."

Yisrael said she enjoys her work and gets a lot of satisfaction from helping people.

"Every day in this life is pain and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

"Every day is hard. If I can help a client get through the pain that is today and maybe just maybe make tomorrow's pain not so unbearable then I have done my job," she said. "I help people and by doing so I help myself. Any message from God that is given to a client is something I hear and can use as well."

Actually, I did have something interesting happen this weekend. On Friday I attended the witches’ coffee and while there I ran into an old client who I had not seen for almost a year. Her name is Amy, wonderful little witchy (Note the use of the letter W, not B). What was fun about running into her was that about a ye... read more

To give you some back-story, I had read for this client about a year ago. This client was concerned about her niece who was fighting for custody of her two small boys.
Her niece was living in another state and was also a mentally deficient woman.
In my reading last year I foresaw that she would in fact win custody of her two sons but as a cautionary note, I felt that this battle would have a bitter-sweet ending.
A few months ago the case c... read more

Yesterday I had an enjoyable reading with a new client. One thing that was interesting is that this client showed me some poetry that had just ‘poured’ out of her one night, as if possessed. This was an older woman who had never written a lick of poetry before. I felt that she was in fact channeling and determined to find out whom.
Before I reveal my thoughts on who was reaching out to her from the other side I want to ‘put out there’ t... read more

Well, boy was I wrong because when I got home I found out that while I was away from home blogging for you all, a hostage situation had taken place in my area. In fact, my home was used as the staging off point for the SWAT team. So, indeed excitement had happened yesterday…I just missed it lol.
I think it may be time to move to a swankier area, ya?
