guess it's official... punk is taking it's dieing bref (thanks, Cap'n...). well, the FIRST sign was when the insipid stylings of Green Dork... er... Day, were touted as being punk. tonight, though, i was witness to further proof:

an AARP commercial, using as it's musical bed a song by the Buzzcocks...

sadly old is new and new is old again. Nothing is sacred from the machine that is marketing.

who the fuck are you to say green day isn't punk? as far as I'm concerned, part of the punk ethic is *not* being as nit-picky & label-centric as the rest of the populace. and just because a catchy song here & there made by a punk band gets co-opted by the norms for their marketing or whatever does not in any way make the concept, soul &/or ethics of punk null & void.

shit, back in 1983 I had older punks at my school telling me I wasn't punk - and that bugged the living crap out of me. I made a promise to myself at the time that I was never going to be the holier-then-thou punk who made judgments of who was punk & who wasn't. I was just at a punk show this past weekend, and there were tons of teenage punks there, and I knew that many of my age peers would have been looking down upon them - but not me. I knew these kids probably had just as much punk ethic as I did way back when. except maybe for the girl all decked out in hot topic gear. but shit, at least she was there - who knows? maybe she'll see the light too.

so I have to ask djin, when did you grow up?

'cause really, if yer gonna dish out commentaries like this, you ain't no punk, punk.

punk word use=13
i don't even know what the punk soul/ethics etc are. i just know what i like. i just remember sammy tellin me "now THAT'S punk rock" when i told him that i got my black cardigan sweater with the three little skulls on it at tj maxx for $4. that made me happy, and i think about that everytime i wear it.

this heartwarming story brought to you by muse, the sappiest triber ever.

sounds like there's been a pig out there getting some steady blumpies from the little pop darlings...
Green Fay, who have been poseurs for years, now, are about as punk as Britney Spears is a singer.
sad to see such a mind get sucked up and carried off by bandwagons, hype, and marketing to the point where even there sense of humor is lost in the whirlwind. hope those little hooves find some traction soon...

when I first moved to california, I used to see green day play at house paries, backyards, etc. they did what every other punk band did - and they had fun doing it. me & my friends used to make fun of them because they were so pop-y amongst all the heavier punk bands in the area. but they liked what they did, and it paid off fer them. just because they make money off the music they play does not make them un-punk.

also, insulting me is not an answer as to why green day is not punk.

try again oh high falutent one.

i only gassed back at he who blew the first insults...

and i also saw no need to "answer why green day is not punk" as i saw no question posed. speaking of which, the "poseur" status is plenty enough to answer that unasked question... "hey! i know! let's sing with phony brit accents! THAT'LL show'em how punk we are!"

more succinct yet more verbose (and what put me in the mood to begin with) would be the posts from captainatheism:

right, green day were the first, and only, band to sing with a fake accent.
imo, there's nothing wrong with changing yer accent as you please. if a guitarist can change their tone, a singer can change their accent.

ok, let me ask you this: what makes green day poseurs? from what I can see, they aren't pretending to be anything that they're not.

and not saying yer on his tip, but fuck john lydon - he's just as much of an opportunist as anyone else.

got news for both of you:

you're older than you ever were. and punk has been dead since before I even hit high school. Just cause you didn't notice doens't mean it's not sitting there stinking up the room.

yeah, yeah, whatever... go back and listen to some more of yer adult contemporary, oh hollow one...

most guitarists, when changing the tone of their guitar, don't keep it at the same tone all the time, unless they're too stupid to figure out how. a person's voice is one of the things that identify who they are. changing it to take on a character is one thing, but changing it "permanently" amounts to fakery, which amounts to posing as something which one is not...
face it. there are no winners in this battle. i say now what i said years ago. Green Day suck ass. my opinion is my opinion, and i am utterly entitled to it, as well as to post it in my blog, or anywhere else i see fit. just because you disagree with me isn't going to change my mind. any amount of personal anecdotes or unsubstantiated argument will have no effect. if it did, then obviously i would be nothing but a poseur.
as for Lydon, no argument about him being an opportunist. in fact, they were quite upfront about it on their reunion tour, going so far as to refer to it as "the filthy lucre tour". boiling that down even more, Sid, everybody's hero, was not only a talentless opportunist, but, in the end, a prime example of "culling the herd".

jeebus. who'da thunk such a bitchfest was going to grow out of such a simple thing as posting a simple, humorous observation to my blog...

to think, people actually wonder why i've had so little to do with tribe these past months...

I can't believe you just called me (by inference) an adult.
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 10:26 PM
actually, i didn't, by inference nor any other means, but it's quite fine that the insult was completely over your head. it won't be the first, nor the last time. living an oblivious life does seem to have it's perks...
