Dancing is an expression of true joy and beauty. Not competing. Not glaring at the other dancer that you think might be your competition. Not showing off that you can do the moves better than anyone else. Once you've lost the pure wonder of dance, and have shifted to competition mode, you've lost what dancing is about. In my eyes, you've become a worse dancer than the clumsiest beginner - if they're full of joy.

True raqs is gracious and draws people to it, and to you - it's joy and light and darkness and sadness and anger expressed - but not at the expense of others. It's WONDER - expressed in a sisterhood, and creating a sisterhood - or more than that, (we've gotta include our incomparable male belly dancers) it's inclusive of all humanity that shares that same wonder.
