about me
I got sucked in here by the gravity well of various friends. I'm a software analyst by trade, a musician and photographer by inclination. My musical interests run from alt.country to free jazz to Middle Eastern music. I mostly play guitar, but have recently developed a powerful interest in frame drums (tar, bodhran, tambourine, etc). I also do a lot of bellydance photography, which is uniquely challenging. Some of my dance photos are in my profile - go see!

out of sorts (blog entry) I've spent most of the last two weeks on the road, doing family duties - 3000 miles, my grandmother's funeral, countless relatives, finding graves, even going to church. With the exception of coming back home briefly for a gig and the Raquy works... read more

I am a leaf on the wind (blog entry) No, this doesn't have anything to do with Firefly. I'm just not sure what to call this post that says what I want to say, succinctly.

simplicity (blog entry) This year, I got two cds for Yule, albums that I had on cassette/vinyl and loved, but never got around to replacing. The first was "Songs from the Wood" by Jethro Tull, and the second was "The Trinity Sessions" by the Cowboy Junkies. Jethro Tull... read more

My Blog

I've spent most of the last two weeks on the road, doing family duties - 3000 miles, my grandmother's funeral, countless relatives, finding graves, even going to church. With the exception of coming back home briefly for a gig and the Raquy workshop, I've hardly touched musical instruments in that time.

And it HURT.

I've been trying to play doumbek for a couple of hours now, and I'm just sucking beyond belief. I'm almost afraid to pick up a guitar, for fear of what my mind and fingers... read more

To play music well with others, you have to submit to the music itself. You cannot rule it; you can either go along, or not. And if none of the players will submit, there will be no music - just a cacophony of shouting voices, the Tower of Babel. To play effectively with others, you have to be willing to play quietly, to play sparsely, to share and... read more

This year, I got two cds for Yule, albums that I had on cassette/vinyl and loved, but never got around to replacing. The first was "Songs from the Wood" by Jethro Tull, and the second was "The Trinity Sessions" by the Cowboy Junkies. Jethro Tull got one listen. The Cowboy Junkies have been in constant rotation since I got it. These days, that Jethro Tull just seems too, well, progressive... lots of time signature changes, elaborate riffs, and complexity for complexity's sake. I enjoy tha... read more

Over the last several months, I've definitely moved from being a guitarist to being a multi-instrumentalist. My preferred instruments these days are lap steel and frame drums. The real fun of playing oddball instruments is playing with other people. Some of these instruments (like lap steel) aren't so much fun to play alone, but work really well in groups. At jam sessions and informal group play, they're really popular. Everyone brings a guitar to a music circle... but bring a steel, and... read more
