Ocean Beach Foundation Volunteers needed

   Sat, March 31, 2007 - 3:09 PM
The Ocean Beach Foundation is seeking volunteer support in its
campaign to preserve Ocean Beach. Through our tireless efforts, the
NPS has rescinded the ban on fires at Ocean Beach. The NPS has
implemented a temporary firepit program through the end of the fire
season (~September). OBF is now seeking volunteer support to make this
temporary program a tremendous success.

Below is a list of volunteer opportunities, the dates, and relevant
contact information. Please forward this email to your friends,
family, and anyone interested preserving the beach. If you do forward
this email, be sure to remove any reference to the men's circle
mailing list.

1. Bonfire Survey
What and Why: We will be taking a survey of the # of bonfires/per
night at Ocean Beach. This will help us determine demand and therefore
create a leverage point to lobby the NPS to have more fire pits.
The Deets: We are looking for volunteers to go out to Ocean Beach
once/week. The volunteer will simply note the number of visible fires
on Ocean Beach (easily done from the parking area between Lincoln and
Fulton). The volunteer should be able to go out on the same night of
the week, preferably at the same hour during peak usage (9-10PM). The
survey should take 5 minutes maximum. Ideal if you live close to the
beach.
The Dates: Ongoing starting 4/1

2. Fire Pit Maintenance
What and Why: Maintenance is the key to the NPS continuing with the
firepit plan. The hope is that any nails and glass will be centralized
in the pits making clean up much easier.
The Deets: Twice/week, we will be helping clean out the fire pits.
This will be done on Wednesday nights (Ocean Beach Foundation) and
Sunday mornings (Surfrider Foundation). This involves cleaning out the
pits and bagging any trash.
The Dates: Twice/week Starting 4/14.

3. Ongoing Beach Cleanup Events
What and Why: OBF will have organized beach cleanups approximately
every 6 weeks. The NPS's biggest concern is glass and nails on the
beach. The glass and nails are the biggest source of complaints by
visitors. If we show an overall reduction, the NPS will definitely
increase the backing of the project (more pits, perhaps more funding).
The cleanups are also designed to raise awareness of the issue to the
community. Plus we'll be having some phat beats going during the
cleanup.
The Deets: All supplies will be provided. Bring a desire for a clean
beach and a booty to shake.
The Dates: Next cleanup is Sunday 4/22 (Earth Day), 2 PM

Thanks for all the support in preserving the cultural and natural
beauty of Ocean Beach.
