My Life
creating a vision INCOME GENERATION at the SANCTUARIES!
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 12:04 PMOk, I know life at sanctuary, is Laizez-fare, Anarchy,Chaos rules! That is a place where everyone is doing their thing! A place for urban visitors to vacation. But I've long said what's missing is income generation ( beyond DONATIONS) both as a collective & for the inividual.
I'd like US to really address Classism & Sustainability! I've witnessed too many well intentioned, talented faeries, visit sanctuary over the years as a long term visitor. Want to make the leap as a steward/resident. What unfolds is running out of money, crushed hopes, deprivation & despair that leads to panic! Then you leave in a tailspin back to the GRID! for survival. I Wish for the individual & the collective to THRIVE! I wish everyone could go on SEBATICAL, & create a new body of work! Full expression of oneself!
See if you are all ready established, come with resources alls well! Reality is Stuck rural poor. Reality , for the rest of us is little or no resources! How can we address this? I'm not saying I want everyone to be able to leave the city & move to sanctuary. But I am saying MOVE in the neighborhood! I am saying, be creative, find meaning, purpose, give back! PRODUCE!
Is it time for a COLLECTIVE Cottage industry? A Social entreprenural Venture? What would That look like? Shop hours? Income Sharing? Hourly? Can we have the best of both worlds , to do your own thing or plug in?
ExaMples got any? We have the individual Sanctuary as a brand identy, LOGO , loyalty , OK WRONG answer! But Sactuarians have the Collective potential ! We have the network of Gay bookstores that carry RFD magazine, in The greater queer urban communities in the STATES of OR.NM.TN.VT why not Gift cards, candles, silkscreen Tshirts etc MADE at Sanctuary proceeds go to non-profit!
Spinning wool into yarn , from an outside source. paid by the ? maybe it's an online catalogue with paypal! Where urban faries can shop from sanctuary faeries! Support from within!
Shared community kitchen ( that meets health code) for VALUE ADDED FOOD Product. The town of WOLF CREEK , OR has one! Now one is in the works in WOODBURY, TN . We could Can , ferment, produce goods for Farmers Market of food Co-ops! What would that look like as a collective? Provide the ingredients, provide the labor, share the income! vs The individual? Seperate from resident food purse.
again look at what we could do as a collective. Do'nt forget the individual as well. THRIVE!
Another aspect
The Faerie Fund, for emergencys, personal ,travel loans & grants! How about expanding it to be a Social investment , incentive!
MICROLOANS, for faeries , who have legitimate proposals for incubator businesses, Startups! AT Sanctuary , with Neighbors, even Urban faeries could utilize this. We would just need a team, or the board to manage proposals! This could support neighbors wanting to set up a CSA , ( community supported agriculture) that could feed the Mountain & greater community. Could be for Animal husbandry for Lambs, or Lamma WOOL /yarn Think investment think STARTUPS!
I CHALLENGE you"ALL to give to the faerie fund, direct your giving ,Call for MICROLOAN Support!
ANy Ideas, Share your vision with your network, heartcircle ok!
Love & Light

Livelihoods in Community
Such an intersting post about sanctuaries and sustainability. As are the responses received so far.
As someone who has lived at sanctuary and in community for a while I know it is challenging to match persunal goals and gifts with the larger picture. Different models of being in sanctuary work for different people. Some have a disability income. Others bring a six-figure reality with them wherever they live. Some have sponsorship from others who believe in their contribution to sanctuary. Others have no income but make it work by increasing their gratitude and simplicity factors. Sanctuaries and intentional communities are very different realitities although they overlap. The "buisness" of sanctuary is .. well, sanctuary. A place for learning and spiritual actualization. Visitors who come to sanctuary are more often than not able to contribute more than food contributions to assist the church in maintaining itself. Especially those who come for gatherings. Stewards are in an odd positions and significantly different from visitors in their responsibilities. They are the deciscion makers. And those who place the interest of the community ahead of their own. And yet, they are seen as "renting" their experience. Especially by those who only think of sanctuary in terms of gatherings. Yet so often the measure of the steward is often expected from the visitors, and vica versa. Is the goal of sanctuary really getting more people to be able to live there on a long-term basis? Are all persuns who come to sanctuary for rituals and gatherings really cut out to live and love and communicate in a group setting regardless of coin and chores? For me a cottage industry can provide something for the community that would normally have to be aquired by going off the land -making something or growing something at home that we would have to get in town. Then providing the surplus to the larger area community. Not everyone comes to sanctuary to go into buisness for themself. Some do. Not everyone comes to sanctuary to explore transpersunal art or self-actualization. Some do. Some come to heal past traumas or abuses. While others may come to venerate those wounds. Then theres the matter of fairness/sameness. For example, lets say there is a qween out there who gives lip service to sanctuary as a sacred place, even throws their coins for rent, does the token chores to prove themself useful, yet theirs is a social/spiritual nightmare for others -- obsessive behavior, addictive impulses, vandalism, mess-making or general disruption. Yet they pay so they stay, saying they are entitled because thats what so and so is having. People with $ calling the shots for others doesnt seem so fair to me. Especially when the persun is difficult to live with. Nor does not having a role in community for someone who doesnt have economic resources to share. Lately Ive been haunted by a weird post-modern vision of church. One where people come to celebrate, meet interesting people of like-mind, drink designer coffee and experience their freedom which means something different to each. Some will eat the sacrement (or even get in line again and again until its gone) confuse the rush of excitment with genuine religious experience. Most who come to this church have a genuine experience of spirit. This church is run by priests, nuns, monks, office staff, maintenence people all expected to know and exhibit the same talents. This church staff are more than just volunteers, they actually pay to be afforded the luxaries - the outside preceived freedom to do what they want, having an open door reality on anyone and everyone who shows up, playing social services to people with disabilities, settling problems with disfunctional people, fielding complaints thrown at the community from the outside by disgruntled visitors and struggling to make sure that the on-demand services are provided for all. Very troubling dream that Ive been sorting out with the help of community members. Im all for finding greater ways of having sustainability at our sanctuaries. But we need to look at what sanctuary means and the different neuances it has for each persun. New models are definately needed that work for the individual that enhance the community process. |

I hear you
Ralfka,
I hear you, but in all fairness Donations do go to the maintence of sanctuary & bills. Things get done by stewards who live on/off the land , by volunteers, by blood, sweat & tears! What I'm concerned with is looking beyond Gatherings & Donations. Looking ahead for next generation! What I'm concerened with is EQUITY, how can an individual THRIVE living rural, remote on & around the Mountain? How can folks be as self reliant as possible, to have a sustainable community around the mountain, to feed each other & greater community. I do believe CSA's, farmers markets, art & craft fairs & shared community kitchens are a viable way. To Build on our network IE: Urban Circle meets Rural Circle, in terms of prosperity, resources, Talent Bank, Services etc. To look to likeminded philanthropy , to follow through on grant writing. www.resourcegeneration , youth who have inherited wealth working for social justice, breaking the class race divide www.foundationcenter.org , grant monies Arts & Culture www.foodsecurity.org , grant monies , for access to affordable, local organic food Both help with bulding your grant writing skills & proposals. Lets continue to look to real alternative modalities of being! I like your idea of a youth hostel in mexico! Build upon that , what services does it have? cafe? Gallery? Is it on near mass transit? You could join international youth hostel organization! Imagine the Possible! Love & Light Walker |

Wow!!!
Nuthin' Like Draggin' in the BS. Well, having lived in and around "sanctuary", it's just not quite so cut and dry. I had hoped by now that we as "faeries" would move beyond what seems like divisive dialogue. It ain't easy inside the Sanctuary, and it ain't any easier outside. I certainly don't think I've moved back to the city, instead I've spent the last 2 1/2 months snowbound with no income. Gee, I coulda moved back to the city, gotten a dicey teaching job, yadda yadda yadda... Simply taking cyber pot shots at one another doesn't seem to me to be an active statement on making change...and if there's anything I honor, change is a-foot. Big change, small change, gotta go out after this and change the flat tire on my truck, drive into Ramah, get the tire fixed so I'll be able to drive back to my home, get the chains on, drive in--all so I can FINALLY get to my clients tomorrow. Yep, change is now.
Sanctuary is not a place. Sanctuary is not a building. Sanctuary is in your heart. I get to live it every day, and yes, I had to find the way to do it for myself, and that's been extraordinarily empowering. And even as tight as everything is for me right now, the only thing I would change are the ways I empower myself to take better care, have enough food for the winter at the start, have the firewood all gathered!!! To me, those are the things I get to handle myself. In the meantime, I have a handful of clients, and a LOT of time to make my art. I make my Art to make my Art, not to sell it. If someone is entranced enough to want to buy, yeeeeeehawwww. But it's the Art that's the thing for me, not the bucks behind it. And could I please have that in Euros? Stewards are in a challenging position, and all too often simply become the targets of a LOT of shit--some of which we deserve, some of which is not ours as Stewards or even as non-Stewards. This is the nature of dialogue. Personally, I feel much safer out here in the boonies of New Mexico, and although I haven't been able to get to ZMS, which ain't far, I'm very delighted it is there, and I'm eternally thankful and grateful for all those who have stood in the place of Steward to hold it all together, and yes, become targets. Been there, it wasn't fun for me, and I don't think it's a healthy tactic. We make change happen by empowering ourselves. Focus on self, and letting go of wanting to blame others for what's happening in our own lives. That's co-dependency, yuk. Having said all that. Bless you all!! Hugs, VanGuard Balance (Auntie B) |
