about me
Left of center baby boomer in a perpetual state of discovery. Some of my Heras are Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and Maya Angelou. I abhor reality TV, SUV's, NASCAR, mullets, "bling-bling," "pimped rides," and the various other contrivances that trivialize life and destroy the planet. I am hopeful for the future, and find joy in art, music, literature, poetry, and individual people. A womanist in the tradition of Alice Walker and lover of the earth who is my strength and my source.

A dancer, drummer, and daughter of Osun. I follow a solitary path that embraces the traditions of my African and Native American ancestors. A potter refining my hand-building and throwing techniques.

Goddess Work

My journey is moving toward its second year. I still have those moments of panic when I want to cave in and conform, when I attribute everything that is wrong or upside down in my life to my locc’d hair. For a time I thought I could not get a job because my hair was so far from the mainstream that it just put potential employers on the defensive right away. I almost, almost cut them off.

Last night I took a long luxurious hot bath and washed my locs with a lavender scented shampoo. I gent... read more

Medusa was not a monster.

I stand in morning bathroom light
Not knowing where to begin
Searching for signs of Me

There are no more hiding places
No more caves to crawl into
Away from Teryn’s shining warrior

The bathroom mirror
Threatens a bright blade in softly sagging jaw
The faint crow at the corners of my eyes
My locs rage at convention

Medusa was not a monster.

And did she truly die in the mere ... read more

I am in Washington state now, living in Tacoma. The move was rough and the economy has been hard on us but we're finally beginning to see some light and life is beginning to settle down. A wise and sometimes cranky wonderful woman told me that I better find a fun trou... read more

Come celebrate the night...the longest night of the year. In ancient times we gathered round fire circles and danced to drums. We chanted and sang, we honored the dark as a time for renewal and rebirth.

Darkness is that deep potential where seeds are planted and nurtured so that when light returns, they are ready to grow into whatever they are to become...trees, flowers, fruit... even ideas, feelings, all those parts of us that need to come out and breathe free.

It's a time to put a... read more

‘Do not wiggle your hips’; ‘Do not flaunt your bosom’ ; ‘Don’t show off’; ‘Don’t draw attention to yourself’

Everything little girls are taught almost from the time we are inside our mothers' wombs--be a GOOD girl. Being good in those terms is the same as being invisible and moving our bodies in any but the most restrained ways is a sin. At some point in all our lives we found the dance and "remembered" how to let the goddess come up through our bones into our bodies.

When I dance, ... read more
