about me
I am the Nayati (Nay player) for the Seattle based Traditional Arabic Music Ensemble - House of Tarab. Visit our website houseoftarab.com.

The group consists of 6 members: Stephen Elaimy (oud), David McGrath (nay, mizmar), Sallah Ali (violin), Andy Zadrozny(bass), Erik Brown (tablah), & Jane Hall (riqq). This type of ensemble is called a 'Tahkt' in the Arab world. The word Tarab refers to the state of ectasy one experiences while either listening to or performing music. We are all close friends and are very dedicated to studying this art & often feel a sense of Tarab during our performances.
I teach the nay & mizmar to students here in Seattle. Our ensemble performs mostly in the NW but occasionally travels nationally & internationally.

Re: Need advice, just bought new zurna (in Mizmar and Zurna Players) My guess is that you have a La zurna, but that the kamish (reed and post) are not sitting right. Sounds like it's 1/2 step flat. Doesnt mean there's anything wrong with the zurna, most likely the reed. 90% of playing this instrument is getting the... read more
