The Rittmaster

Cavalry: that's what it's all about. I am interested in all sorts of cavalry, from any era, any where, but presently the focus is on Renaissance Horse. Fully armoured Gendarmerie, or Pistoliers, Harquebusiers or Borderhorse, it's all nifty and interesting to me. I've done some classes in Renaissance Cavalry with both in-classroom and in-saddle segments, and want to do more of them.

Horsemanship, saddles, weapons and armour, techniques, tactics, encamping, breeds, all of it is worth discussing in my book.

Rittmaster Frye's Journal

Did a school demo on Tuesday, the first ever for the Warhorse Guild! Gordon gave a talk on knights & armor, as the kids are doing their Medieval section right now, I guess. We armored Gordon up, then he kept talking while I rode back and forth behind him tapping the quintain on Gryphon. It being western Washington, the rain came on schedule and we cut things short, but the kids were about at the

Do we know how to do it right or what? Another slam-bang weekend at Tilbury camp! We had over 25 folks from the Academia della Spada alone! We played, we ate, we sang, we danced (well, some of us danced). There was jousting, English Backsword, archery, and pike drill. Probably other things as well. Needless to say, we'll continue doing this... Rapheal models his new helmet ornament (oops!

The School of the Renaissance Soldier: Actions of the Lowe Countries II, held near Sacramento California this past weekend was a resounding success despite the rain and weather. We had 86 participants this year, along with 20 horses! Above is a picture of the Troop of Horse on the March. More pictures as they come in! Gordon

My Testimonials

October 28, 2005
Gordon has illustrated to me that without good training and a quick sergeant with a truncheon, a foot soldier would follow his primal monkey instinct and climb a tree where scary horseman are loath to go. He has forgotten more history than I will ever know, has the coolest toys ever made by the hand of man prior to the 1700s, and is not as lazy as I thought cavalry would be.

Gordon is the man. I know I'm biased, but I'm so glad I met him and that he's my best friend. Seriously, if you have a question about anything historical (esp. military/political) he's your man. He'll point you in the right direction if he doesn't know the answer (but what are the odds of that?)!
