My Testimonials

April 23, 2007
Shemena is an amazing and inspiring woman, an awesome wife and one of the hippest mamas I know.

She is that rarest of people, one who is genuinely driven to be of service, to give back to the community, to support and help where she can.

She is hands down one of the smartest people I know (which can be a blessing as well as a curse) and has a wicked sense of humor. She is supportive and sympathetic when the situation calls for it and seem to know instinctively when to do that or when to come in with guns blazing and tell you to get your head out of your butt. And she's not afraid to do it.

Shemena is a genuine bad-ass and I love her and am honored to call her my friend.

The Cribnotes...

about me
I'm a 38 year old mother of one son who's just about one, wife of one husband for going on 13 years. We were married on April Fools Day, which has always been a good day for me. I'm a clinical research coordinator at Highland Hospital in Oakland. I want to leave something better than just my carcass behind when I die - but that hasn't stopped me from being a complete goofball most of the time. No science nun, I.

My Blog

My application has been sent to all the medical schools I applied to by the application service. WOOHOO! Let the games begin! (And btw, I think it's kind of fitting that I'm doing this during an Olympic year, don't you?) I've been gently doing my happy dance all night. Oh, and they raised my gpa! How nice of them. :D

Actually, many medical schools. 910 dollars worth, to be specific.

That is all.

Here's the thing. My mom is committed, at least for the next little while. I had this very intense conversation about this arch I've been on with mom with a social worker at the place she's being held right now, and it started me down a thought path that makes sense to me. The last 15 years of my life has been dedicated to my mom, without completely understanding that my involvement was a zero sum, all or nothing thing. In other words, either my whole life needed to be sacrificed for he... read more

So, my mom was committed about a week ago. She desperately needs to be there. Today, I got a panicked phone call from one of the social workers at the agency that helped to commit her, saying that the hospital was planning on releasing her tomorrow. This happened at about 3pm, while I was on the phone with one of my attendings on my work line. My sister and I spent the next few hours calling everyone we could, advocating for her. Every phone call brought us closer to a reasonable outcome... read more
