so now that the elastic is through, pin the ends together ASAP or you'll lose them inside!! make sure it's not twisted up inside the casing. Now try on the pants, pull the elastic as tight as you need it and mark off with a pen leaving an inch to sew together flat. if you are using a drawstring, now is the time to push it through the casing and pull the ends trough the grommets in the front of your pants. after you've sew the elastic together, shove one end of the open part of the casing inside of the other, finish the other end of the casing that is exposed by folding it under and stitching it down, then flatten it out and finish serging the part we skipped of the casing to the pants.

I've serged the elastic casing to the pants leaving about 2" open in the back like i showed you. now i'm using my super high-tech mangled coat hanger and a safety pin to shove the elastic through the casing.

now i cut strips to add to the bottom of each leg. i pretty much made tubes the width of the bottom of the pants leg and serged them on with the tube seam matching up with the inseam of the pants, then i serged the bottom of the tube so later on i can hem them to whatever length i need.

i needed a little more room on the sides, and i wanted to created a stripe effect so I cut two strips of linen and serged them to the sides of the front of the pants. Then i laid out my pockets and pined them down.

So now i've cut 4 long strips of fabric the length of my pants and attached them to the sides of the front and back pieces. You can use a long rectangle of sewn together quilt squares, random patchwork or whatever you want! I kept this pair simple :) pockets aren't attached yet...

so now that the appliqué is sewn on and the pockets are finished, i've serged together the front and back center seam. (the butt crack seam, and the crotch seam) So now i can see about where my pockets need to go. the patchwork panels need to be attached before i sew on the pockets because i don't have enough room for them on the front!

i attached the applique to my pants using a satin stitch on my machine. the satin stitch is just a zigzag stitch that is set to minimum width and size using lowered tension. test it on scraps before ya ruin your pants!

after you cut out the pieces, it needs to be attached before the pants are sew together. lay it out where you want it and attach with fusible interfacing or pins. i use packing tape because i'm lazy :)~

you can make an appliqué if ya want. I drew mine, but a good source to find simple shapes and pictures for these are internet coloring book pages. then i cut it out of different fabrics.

now i'm going to measure about 3 inches in on the outside seam and mark it with a pen, and 5 inches on the bottom and mark it also. do this to both the front and back pattern pieces.

first ya need to find a simple elastic waist pattern and cut out only the front and back pants pieces. you don't need the casings or any of those other pieces for this.
