Intermittent Enthusiasm

I'm Coming To DC (for a visit or two)

Wow. I have two dates where Dave and I are going to be performing together in DC. The first one is July's Women In The Life on the 8th. I'm leaving straight from work on Tuesday and driving right to Madam's Organ in Adam's Morgan. July is StrangeFroot's birthday month my partner in crime and co-host) so I'm making it for the celebration. My good friend from Romka, Mavi has promised to do some visual poetry ala tribal fusion belly dance. If you don't know (thinking about coming?) it's a free event (as always). The bartender is great and there just may be product from performers so feel free to bring some mulla with you ;)

The other event in DC is a show at the Palace of Wonder on August 29th. Ken Vegas offered to help Dave and I to Officially release "Her Panties" with a great show. Ken has promised to perform with us. Romka will be there with there Belly splendor as well as Monica Mac Intyre from Philly. She's a Cello blues woman who's awesome (if I do say so myself). Her sister Marcia has graciously said she will join her on stage with her sister-voice and violin bad-assness. So lucky am I. That show will be $10 and will start at 9.

So Come out and have fun with all of us.

I got a Job!

I ache and I'm smiling. I'm working in a Welding shop and finding out if this is the life for me. If you saw me this weekend , you would have heard me bemoaning the fact that the place I wanted to work said 'no, thank you for your interest'. I was firmly resolved that I would be going in there every chance I got to practice and learn from my friend. Then, Sunday night, I got a call to say that if I wanted to start on Monday (7am-330). I said 'see you then.'

Ah, the double edge sword of 'getting what you ask for'. I haven't worked for anyone else in about a Year... Seven in the morning I have to be there...Wish me strength for my resolve ;)

Hosting The Front Porch

Wow! My buddy, Tim'm West started a open mic night called The Front Porch three years ago and He very graciously saked if I would be a part of the evening by hosting. I said yes. It's at the Mocha Hut on U St, NW, 8pm this Friday the 7th. It's a truly mixed night of poetry and music, men and women, in the life and not...everyone can fit in. yea.

Yea October!

When last I wrote I was in Cleveland. I stayed in my first hotel for the trip. Good going so far I say. Drove up to Chicago and decompressed with friends. Luckily I've been there before this trip. I was feeling a little bruised form the road and didn't feel bad about wanting to hang with my buds. That was Wed eve to Fri morn.

I drove up to Minneapolis to hang with a couple of buds. While I was there we all went dancing at Pi (twice) and went to the Mall of America. Super Big Mall. I saw bad-ass graffiti done by women artists (at Pi and InterMedia Arts, which changes every year). I also went to see the Sugar Hill Gang. One of my friends and her buds are break dancers and they were a part of the pre-show. We left there and went to the 90's. Three dance floors of fun.

Then I drove to Flathead to pick up a friend from home who just moved out west and did the leg to Seattle. I got here in time to read at Seattle Spit at the Wild Rose. My friends talked me into staying for Sister Spit which happens tonight. I went to a couple of regular shows at The Columbia City Theater, Thursdays the Columbia City Cabaret and The Atomic Bombshells. I got to hang out at Pilchuck (a glass blowers paradise) with my friend whom I'm staying with while I'm in Seattle. It's set in the midst of tree farm for the past 30 years. They have thigh high ferns and tree houses.

On Wed the tenth there was a pethora of Bdays in my life. So, I celebrated. I made a phone call across the nation and sang. I made a local call and sang. Then I sang right where I was staying. I went to Archie McPhee's ( which I adore). Later we went to dinner at Tilth (high end, organic, delicious). After that I got a call to come down to Noc Noc for their Rocken' Cabaret. It was Great. There were girls on the poll (athletes), a burlesque chica, a bendy chica from The Pierced Circus and Tribal Fusion Dancers (Hands of Kali). They fully rounded out my Seattle experience.

My last night had me going back to the Wild Rose with some of my transplanted DC peeps to the kick off of Sister Spit's month long tour. Good times.

The First Week

Of course no plan survives the beginning of the battle. So I left DC on Monday rather than the Saterday before. Which left me time to go back to Faire in Crownsville. Yes, still a good time and my grown up taste buds like oyster shooters. I've been going for years and have at times worked there which makes going back especially fun for me.

On to Brooklyn, yea. I stayed with a friend of mine who is going to the Teachers College of Columbia. It was great to meet her peeps and see the campuses. She got me to go to a ballroom dance class with her. It was mad fun. Learned some swing steps and a little bite of some tango (the boy part).

From there I went to Long Island where I got ripped on Jamison. My friend is a bartender there and I think she bent me. If I remembered the whole night I'd say she did. Yea, the blessings of not recalling the worst part and just having access to the good parts (some of those memories are a little vague).

Then we went up to Troy, NY where I got a chance to jump on the mic at Positively Forth Street. There's an afternoon jam session there hosted by Kelly Maguire. Fun!

From there I split from my friends and went to Pittsburgh where I feasted with my buddies in Zafira, who I know from Pennsic War (an SCA event held near there). I love belly dancing and they're doing great shows I'm gonna miss. Olivia is going to DC for Tribal Cafe on the last Sunday this month. When I come back I'm gonna try to make their Carnival show on the 28th. Check it out.

Today I'm in Cleveland typing outside of Talkies Film and Coffee Bar. whew...

Looking forward to what's coming next!

Looking back at May of 2007

Started out with a Birthday. Managed to leave the club and head to Philly where Dave and I (as Black Ink & Bass) featured on the open ing night for the Black Women's Art Festival at Art Noir near Temple University. The next day I managed to get back to DC in time to hit two gigs. The first was The Front Porch at the Mocha Hut on U St. then it was off to Marvel, a fund raiser at DC/AC in Adams Morgan. Dave and I did an electric set. Where we also did our electric for the Women In The Life Poetry series Usually we keep it acoustic with the upright bass. After that we had a break for rehersal and then it was the Great Big International Drag King Show at the 9:30 Club. dadadad while housesitting for friends how have the sweetest Great Dane ever, Maddy. All this just in time for Blk Pride in DC where I'm house sitting in gay central. Then the last week promises the debut for Dave and my's first EP, Just A Taste Of... Whew. Sometimes one must be a warrior.
