Meditation and conflict resolution
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 7:43 AM
A new book by U.S. Army Col. Brian Rees entitled "Terrorism, Retaliation and Victory: Awaken the Soul of America to Defeat Terrorism Without Casualties" discusses a study published in the Journal of Offender Rehabilitation showing 72% reduction in international terrorism using Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Invincible Defense Technology.
The remarkable findings show that large groups of peace-creating meditation experts decrease international conflicts, including deaths and injuries due to terrorism. The study reports that group practice of the Transcendental Meditation(TM) and TM-Sidhi program by 7,000 people decreases terrorism and international conflicts worldwide.
On three different occasions during 1983-1995, groups of approximately 7,000 meditators were formed for periods lasting from 8 to 11 days, twice in the United States and once in Holland. The effects were studied using terrorism data collected completely independently by the Rand Corporation, the renowned California think tank. Five days after the assemblies started, terrorist activities in the world calmed down, the study reports. The study also found that warfare due to national and international conflicts decreased by approximately 30%. Assessment of the effects on warfare came from reports appearing in the New York Times and London Times.
"Our formula predicts that the square root of 1% of the world population meditating together would be needed to create a worldwide effect. That number was approximately 7,000 at the time of the study," said study author Dr. David Orme-Johnson of Maharishi University of Management. "We found that the effect could not be explained by any trends or cycles in the data, or by the time of year or other factors. Nothing else was happening that could have explained the sudden drop in armed conflicts throughout the world at that time," said the study's coauthor Dr. Michael Dillbeck, also of Maharishi University of Management.
Group Meditation Produces CoherenceSo how does it work? According to the researchers, the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs take the mind to its innermost state of silence, which is the unified field of natural law, the source of order in the universe. When enough people in society experience this level of awareness, then the coherence of the unified field is spread throughout the world, softening ancient ethnic, political, and economic stresses that are at the basis of war. "Fifty studies have shown that the influence of Transcendental Meditation on the larger society is to replace crime, hostility and fighting with mutual respect and cooperation," said Dr. Orme-Johnson.
Experts Emphasize Importance of This ApproachAccording to Professor Ved Nanda, Director of International Legal Studies at the University of Denver College of Law, "These studies provide a great hope for humanity, a breath of fresh air. We have repeatedly seen that international law, treaties, and even the United Nations cannot prevent war, or even contain it within certain rules such as the Geneva Convention. Can we afford to overlook this research? It breaks my heart that so many people are being killed every day, including many fine young Americans, when we haven't even tried this first."
Another proponent of trying this approach is Dr. David Edwards, Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. "Although I myself have not been directly involved in this research, from my perspective of almost 40 years of study of foreign policy, arms control, and theories of social change, I can say that this is extremely significant research. I have participated in urging members of Congress and other government leaders to try it. The cost of implementing a permanent coherence creating group in the world is less than a single B2 bomber."
"Peace Palaces" Being EstablishedSo far, the U.S. government has not added this approach to its arsenal of defense strategies, so Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who pioneered this approach to peace, is organizing a permanent group of 40,000 in India and 3,000 Peace Palaces throughout the world. Peace Palaces are places where these techniques are taught and practiced to generate coherence in their local region. A Peace Palace was inaugurated on April 10 in the Catskills of New York. In addition to creating coherence for the New York area, it will serve as a place where members of the United Nations can go to learn more about this approach.
MIND, ECONOMICS AND ANXIETIES

Disappointments, anxieties, fears.
Fulfillment’s, hopes, faith.
These alternate in our lives, or the two sets even remain on parallel tracks of the mind at all times, rendering some joy and some sorrow.
These days people are often heard talking of their anxieties and fears. Why not enjoy that which you have achieved instead of regretting what has been just so far beyond reach?
Make a list of all the fulfillment’s, pleasures, moments of laughter, causes for smiles you have had; savour them all. Enjoy what is there to enjoy; refuse to suffer what is there to suffer.
Do not feel so helpless. Your destiny was not made by God, nor by stars nor by tarot cards. Your sankalpas, intentions and resolves make your destiny. In last lives you made your destiny for this life. In this life you have also been altering your destiny afresh, also making your destiny for future lives.
We bear and hear of so many anxieties and complaints about these ‘modern times’, about what is happening to ‘all of us’ ‘these days’. The cycles and parallel journeys of joys and sorrows are perennial. They have never ceased. Read the ancient story books, the Jatakas, Katha-sarit-sagara and all the rest that narrate the lives of ordinary people in the olden times. They all enjoyed the same things we do; they all suffered the same things we do, and had the same anxieties. This will be so ten thousand years hence when people will feel nostalgic for our present times as ‘those good old times’. It will be so, if you are planting the sankalpa for it to be that way. Or, we can change the direction of our individual and collective sankalpas. That is the secret for your future a year hence and a millennium hence.
It is your sankalpa that determines the course of your destiny. You sow an intention, water it, make it grow, your actions follow from a determined and concentrated mind and create your surroundings as you wished for them to be. But you must learn the art of sowing the seeds of sankalpa.
Some thing happens in the subtle world around your soul six months before an event occurs in the visible world. The thoughts you are planting at this moment will show their result six months, or longer, from now. Have you, with a well groomed intent, chosen the thoughts you are planting? Did you choose them two years ago so that you would not have had to regret the results of your thoughts today? Bear this principle in mind and as my Gurudeva Swami Rama of Himalayas said : You are the architect of your destiny.
A sankalpa is not a fleeting wish followed by a whole different wish and a chain of all and sundry wishes. At the moment of sankalpa there is no anxiety.
Count your breaths for a few minutes ( there is an art to it that you need to learn).
Let the mind thereby become totally calm, soothed, wrinkle-free, a chamber of silence and stillness.
Then end a quiet, yes, very quiet, message to the forces of the subtle world.
Having done so, leave it there, surrender it to the forces, to the divine will, and do not struggle.
You may repeat this process daily.
You will begin to sense what your course of action should be. You will find yourself taking that course of action. The ‘forces’ will send you unexpected helpers and help from unknown sources.
Stay calm all the way through; an observer, not a doer.
Another fact of cosmic reality you need to learn is the harmony of the forces of the opposites. Take an aeroplane from Delhi, fly westwards, keep flying, you end up in the east – in China, and back to Delhi. Every force carries its opposite in its womb and nurtures it, supports it, makes it manifest.
The same applies in economics, as has happened in USA, and then adversely affecting the world economics. People and the banking systems created faux wealth. Then they could not keep up with the façade. The economy crashed. The price of petrol fell from $150.00 a barrel to $60.00 a barrel. The prices of homes and properties fell. The fall is the result of the rise. Now, we need some wisdom to control the upward cycle of the economy that will begin soon as the wheel has to keep turning, the present ‘low’ situation carries in its womb the principle of the ‘high’.
How do we balance these lows and the highs so that we are not again falling in the same trap? The answer is wisdom. Learning to balance the forces.
This requires a fresh sankalpa, that of keeping desires under control. The reason the Indian economy has been the one least affected by the worldwide slow down, started in USA, is that people here are not prone to economic extremism. The present day prevalent Charvaka philosophy of world economics is ‘rNam krtvaa ghrtam pibet’, that is, ‘borrow money and drink ghee’, ‘take international loans and build skyscrapers’. What is the reason that America’s national debt is ten trillion dollars, and the total of US citizens’ debt is fourteen trillion! It is simply this Charvaka philosophy. It was recognized by the ancient Indian sages and was rejected by them in helping develop the minds of the masses. The average Indian, unlike an American or European, considers it an ignominy to be indebted. So there is a certain amount of ‘conservatism’, a withholding, a self-restraint built into the Indian temperament and consequently in the Indian economy. The world needs to learn from this.
If we do not fall into the trap of the Charvaka philosophy on which the present world economy runs, India will sail through the current slowdown. Indian economy is affected only in the areas which are dependent on the Euro-American systems; where it is independent, it is balanced.
So, keep to the ancient tradition of a-pari-graha, keeping desire under control. If you have not the money to buy a larger car, make-do with the smaller one, and, more important, be contented with it :
santoShaad anuttamah sukha-laabhah
From contentment one receives unexcelled comfort. --- Yoga-sutras of Patanjali 2.4
What will save America is the American habit of charity. We do not have figures for this phenomenon in India but during the present slump in the U.S. economy, the level of charity has increased; people are giving away more. Those who have are sharing with those who do not have. The statistics for that have been published.
This again demonstrates the harmony of the forces of the opposites. During economic difficulties, people give more to others. The forces of the subtle world are turning the cycle around from the philosophy of ‘me’ ‘me’ ‘me’ to sharing and thereby evening out the gap between those who have and those who have not.
If Indians follow the same principle, the economy will turn around faster. [For example, if the companies can manage it, let them keep surplus staff till the economy turns around; the staff will pay for itself by hard work later.]
Savour your fulfilments, not suffer your deficiencies
Remember that you are the maker of your destiny, no other
Learn the special art of effective sankalpa
Learn how the subtle world shapes the manifest world and how we can reshape the subtle world so it would shape the manifest world to fulfil our wishes
Learn how to use the principle of the harmony of opposite forces for our benefit
Practice a-pari-graha by way of (a) desiring less for oneself and (b) sharing with others at individual and at corporate/collective level, so that
the subtle forces may bring about not an artificially heated economy and such but one that is steady and stable in the long term.
This applies to ‘restrained’ individual temperament being maintained, being applied to national economy, to influence the world economy.
Remember, an anxious mind cannot make right decisions. Above all else, learn the art of becalmed mind.

PRESS RELEASE FOR “THE ONE NATION”
April 30, 2008:
Hundreds of Indigenous Sovereign Nations who live and prosper in the traditional ways within the current borders of Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Caribbean have agreed to sign The Declaration of Sovereignty of The One Nation (being a Nation consisting of all Sovereign Indigenous Nations of the World), by which these Indigenous Sovereign Nations will join together to re-assert their inherent sovereignty as ONE, inviting all other Indigenous Sovereign Nations from all around the world to join. This “happening” was foretold in the Prophesies thousands of years ago. On April 20, 2008, The Algonquin Nation from Northern Quebec held a sacred ceremony, at which time the traditional Elders signed the Declaration, thereby giving birth to The One Nation. The signing was done by the Algonquin to “light the torch” to be passed along to other Indigenous Sovereign Nations. The Cree followed soon thereafter. Other Nations are welcome to hold their own ceremony in their own way in their own time to effectuate their own signing.
Otherwise, the next gathering for the purpose of signing is currently scheduled to take place on July 11, 2008, in Washington, D.C., at the conclusion of The Longest Walk, when many Elders and Nations will be present. It is hoped that the Dalai Lama will also be present for this sacred event. The Australian and New Zealand Sovereign Indigenous Nations will begin to effectuate their own signing across their sacred lands at their sacred “Dreamtime” sites on August 11, 2008. The torch will be passed across The Australian and New Zealand Continent at that time. This signing may take a couple of months to be accomplished, but it will be accomplished.
As most of you know, on September 13, 2007, the United Nations’ General Assembly approved the much touted United Nations’ Declaration on The Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the “UN Declaration”). Although this UN Declaration, importantly, recognizes the right of our Nations to seek self-determination, it does not, in and of itself, take the next step to advance the cause of Indigenous Sovereign Nations around the world. Only the Declaration creates The One Nation, and only The One Nation can lead us forward.
Again, those who know will understand that the traditional governing systems and the traditional cultures of these Indigenous Sovereign Nations were and continue to be decimated by laws enacted by their “host” countries, including Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Caribbean and numerous others, which laws, among other things, impose false (proxy) (foreign) governments and laws on our peoples. This true Declaration of true Sovereignty has the blessing of the Creator and International Law.
The creation of The One Nation “immediately” frees the Indigenous Sovereign Nations to re-assert their sovereignty, an inherent sovereignty granted by the Creator to each human at birth, which was never surrendered and never could have been surrendered. It has taken the Indigenous Sovereign Nations over 200 years to regroup and arrive at this crucial point in history to re-commence performing their sacred duties to care for Mother Earth, all Her creatures, great and small (and, hence, all humans too). It is no accident and no coincidence that the Creator has chosen this time to arrange for the re-assertion of these ancient Nations. The air, the water, the land and all living things are in danger now as never before. The One Nation is born from all things positive, not from anger for past oppression and atrocities undeniably committed. These things are forgiven. When the colonizers arrived, as predicted in the Prophesies, our ancestors welcomed them and cared for them, as the Creator instructed, when they could not care for themselves. They were like children sitting at our feet in need of sustenance, which many of our ancestors gladly provided. The children grew up steadily over the course of several hundred years, only to rebel against their caregivers, reacting with greed and forgetfulness of all that was done for them and all that we tried to teach them, harming our Mother the Earth in the process. For this they must also be forgiven. The time has come, however, when these now young adults must realize and admit the error of their youthful and frivolous ways and turn once again to the wisdom and care of those who raised them. Unwittingly, they developed along the way the technological and linguistic means for all Indigenous Sovereign Nations to now join together with one good mind and one pure heart for the good of all humans.
In conclusion, The One Nation extends an open invitation to all Indigenous Sovereign Nations to join on this historic and epic peaceful path into the future and also to convey this all-important message to all colonizing states: “The One Nation extends, once again, its open hand in friendship and in good faith as our gesture of our desire to continue to coexist for the benefit and respect of all living creatures and our one true Mother, the Earth herself.”
THE ONE NATION
VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Declaration of Principles
Written by: Edna (Grandma) Gordon, Seneca Hawk Elder
To overcome the Cultural Barriers of Divided Nations, a Declaration of Principles within Yourself, The Youth, and All Races of Mankind is to keep the Sacred Fires of our Ancestors burning for Future Generations to learn the Wisdom Knowledge of the Elders. Bless your Sacred Fires to Gather in Unity for Inspiration, Harmony, Cultural Exchange, Identity and Respect for One’s Heritage. Spread Your Wings in Balance like the Butterfly, the Bird, the Hawk, and the Eagle to scale the Heights of Your Creative, Potential Self to Light the Spiritual Fires Within. There are some things in Life that you Cannot Change, the Eternal things.
First, let it be known that the “vision” set forth herein is written by humble humans, with no direct knowledge of what the Creator may have in store. It is not a “plan” and is not even a “blueprint.” It is simply and humbly the best guess of the direction in which The One Nation is to take to assist each of us individually and as part of The One Nation to take all the appropriate actions and steps in this material realm to bring about the changes required by the Creator, as assisted by the Ancestors and the multitude of “helpers,” whose assistance is acknowledged and to whom we give our Great Thanks! This Statement has been reviewed by as many of the Elders involved as possible so as to assure its credibility and veracity as we move forward on this journey, as we participate in this “happening.”
It was suggested that this journey be referred to as a “happening,” rather than any other name, such as “movement.” This, because there are many movements in various walks of life, from lofty goals such as civil rights (race, gender and religion), to even more mundane movements such as a grassroots political party. This is not to detract from the importance of these “movements,” but to simply state that what we have undertaken has been long-awaited and has far-reaching consequences that even we cannot anticipate or contemplate, a “happening.”
We cannot talk about the vision without reference to its essential roots, The Prophesies. Each Nation involved, through its Elders, has expressed the sense that what we are engaged in is somehow associated with the Promise made by the Creator to all “true humans” in “the beginning” to bring about, at the appropriate point in time, a world in which our spirits will be freed to live in accordance with the Instructions from the Creator, with generosity to others, sharing what we have, courageousness, peace (both inner and external) and harmony, best expressed in the “Declaration of Principles” first written above. It is up to each of us to determine whether we want to continue along the path of greed, lies, deception, illusion, isolation, fear, anger, violence and hatred, or whether we will “walk through the door” that has now been opened to us. We have heard it said that many have lost their connection to Mother Earth and have been overtaken by the materialistic societies that surround us. We have heard it said that by losing that connection, we have lost our connection to the spiritual. Therefore, we have heard it said that in order to regain that connection for each of us and for all true humans and the children yet to come, we must re-establish that connection. Everyone has a different way of expressing these thoughts, but most acknowledge that these thoughts are true. We can call the Nameless One, the creator of all, the Creator or Great Spirit or The Great Reality or The Great Mystery (or however else you have been taught to make reference and pay homage). We can subscribe to the traditional teachings of our Ancestors or to the teachings of Jesus or Buddha or Jehovah or any other spiritual body of principles, but there is only one Great Reality of which we are all a part and we can each agree that the time has come.
Our Mother Earth is under attack as never before. The signs are clear to us that the time for unification of all indigenous Nations is here. We acknowledge that all peoples of Mother Earth are indigenous to somewhere, that the fortunate few Nations that have made it through the onslaught of the so-called “civilized world” are the ones that have been selected to join together and to assist all others to regain their indigenous cultures that were taken from them long ago, some at the hands of the Byzantine Empire, some at the hands of the Roman Empire, some at the hands of the Imperial Chinese or Japanese Empires or , as now, at the hands of the colonizing empires. One thing is clear. The culture of each of these indigenous peoples, including their languages and ceremonies, was stolen from them and must be returned. We know this because our Nations were under the same attack by the same forces, with different names and faces, but coming from the same dark source. The attacks indeed continue to this day, although more subtle and devious than outright massacre as practiced in the past.
This is where we are. As all of us know, on September 13, 2007, the United Nations’ General Assembly approved the United Nations’ Declaration on The Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the “UN Declaration”). Although this UN Declaration, importantly, recognizes the right of our Nations to seek self-determination, it does not, in and of itself, take the next step to advance the cause of Indigenous Sovereign Nations around the world. The One Nation IS that next step, the necessary next step to lead us forward into our future and the future of the succeeding generations.
Humbly, we agreed on March 30, 2008, at a seminal conference call, that the Algonquin Nation would “light the torch” of The One Nation by signing the Declaration on April 20, 2008, the first Full Moon of the Spring. This was done and other Nations have since signed and will continue to do so. The sense of the Elders present at the signing was that a powerful “door” or “portal” had been opened through which all may walk by signing the Declaration. Otherwise, the next major gathering for the purpose of signing is currently scheduled to take place on July 11, 2008, in Washington, D.C., at the conclusion of The Longest Walk, when many Elders and Nations will be present. It is hoped that the Dalai Lama will also be present for this sacred event (not known whether Tibet might sign). Thereafter, or at the same time, it is anticipated that other Nations from other continents will also sign. It is believed that, as more Nations sign, and as the “word” circulates Elder to Elder, Nation to Nation, eventually all Nations that were supposed to sign, will sign.
As said above, there are many peoples whose culture was stolen and procedures will need to be set in place at the appropriate time to return to these peoples their culture and their “Nationhood,” so that these Nations, then newly declared as such, may join the One Nation. At the same time, or thereafter, as deemed best by the Elders at the time, provision will be made for individuals to become citizens of The One Nation. These individuals, who are many, will have no affiliation with an indigenous Nation, but will need to be “sheltered” under the protective wings of The One Nation in some fashion and under certain procedures to be established by the Elders of The One Nation. This is much like the way a citizen of an existing country may change citizenship from one country to another or perhaps maintain a “dual” citizenship.
Perhaps the most immediate benefit of The One Nation is its ability to access International Tribunals, something most (if not all) indigenous Nations are currently unable to do. Most (if not all) of the time, we have been forced to allow the colonizing “host” country to decide disputes we might have with that “host” country (as when we are drawn into the US, Canadian, Australian or other courts to resolve “sovereignty” issues, where we are almost certain to lose) (as has been the case historically). The One Nation will be considered an “equal” among all existing countries of the world, with the equal ability to access a more neutral tribunal to determine disputes over the environment, land, resources, such as water/ air, etc, This, so that we may take our rightful place as stewards of Mother Earth and the environment. There are many Elders who believe, who say that they “know,” that The One Nation is Prophesied to replace the other existing countries in the world, whose demise is imminent. To these Elders, whose vision must be respected, if not followed, The One Nation is destined to be THE entity to provide organization and stability to all of our precious Nations when the other countries “melt away” from whatever causes. We say no more on this, but mention this for the sake of a complete, honest and open discussion of the vision in accordance with our traditional principles.
THIS “VISION STATEMENT” HAS BEEN REVIEWED AND APPROVED BY THE ELDERS OF THE NATIONS WHO HAVE SIGNED THE DECLARATION AS OF THE DATE OF THIS STATEMENT, AND BY THE ELDERS AND OTHER SUPPORTERS OF THE ONE NATION UNDER THE “UMBRELLA” OF “THE SOVEREIGNTY PROJECT.”
As my being walks along the plane of Mother Earth
It sends humble Great Thanks for the grandeur of your many Blessings.
The Beauty of Your Creation radiates Your intent of Harmony,
Upon me and the Spirits walking beside me.
I humbly stand before You by virtue of Your Grace
And pray, by virtue of Your Grace, to be guided along Your pathway of
Love, Respect, Peace, Unity and Spiritual Harmony
Between and among all beings, seen and unseen.
