When I read that citation anew, I suddenly see that it is a rephrasing of Descartes' enhanced statement: cogitur - there is thinking.

That is, in essence, all we are sure off. Our thoughts do not allow us to derive of them any knowledge of anything external to these thoughts. I won't linger on it; many books have been written around the subject, and it is utterly sterile.
