thoughts on dance...

an interesting thought on dance....
Current mood: content

I've heard so much about how bellydance is so sensual and erotic... but it is originated in The Life Cycle of Birth. The movements emulate the bodies cycle of birth- there are 5 basic movements (info shared by the Lovely Ladies @ Goddess Dancing) that are involved- and each is a perfectly natural and common, and occur throughout nature and the Universe.

1) The Circle- The Sun, A Full Moon, The Earth, Blood Cells, The Womb- stretched full with child....

2) The Cresent- The Earth as it is lit by the Sun (from quite a distance, like the Moon) and there we have it's opposite and yet same instance; A Crescent Moon, The Fallopian Tube, The Top of The Womb... and a Rainbow...

3) The Shimmy- Raindrops falling from leaves, Lightning flashing across the sky... it is a vibration, like muscular trembling from an adrenaline rush...or exhaustion...

4) The Figure Eight- a cross section of the Heart, shows many figure eights- Blood flowing through our bodies follows a figure eight pattern, the Muscular structure of a woman's body that allows her to give birth...

5) The Undulation- It is the pattern of a DNA strand, the way a Snake moves across the ground, the natural curve in a Spine, and the natural bends in a river....

The Fallopian tube is the path for the Circular egg, a guide to it's destination along a Cresent shaped tube, where it is housed in the Circle of a woman's womb while she carries it, as it grows. As a woman's body labors to bring forth life, The Circle of her womb Undulates with contractions. The Crescent or top of her womb contracts to push. Adrenaline flows through her veins to bring the energy she needs to push a child through the Figure Eight configuration of muscles that form the birth canal. Her body shimmies with the force of strain as she pushes and exhaustion between pushes. The child passes through the Circular shape of the dialated cervix and then through the Figure Eight shaped muscular structure as it enters the world.

Birthing Attendants would dance a Birth or Belly Dance with the Mother-to-be as she strained through contraction after contraction to bring life forth.

The Dance was also done to reconnect with Birthing Energy by women who were already Mothers, in gratitude for the gift of life they were honored to share. In some cultures the Dance was done to honor The Goddess in Women's Rituals, and in others to manifest Fertility for women who had not yet conceived, or wished to do so again.

How does that information fit? Where is any of that meant to be a performance by a woman, intended to entice a man? Where is that erotic? Once again Western Culture and Society has managed to skew something natural and innocent into a complete perversion.

Women are beautiful. Watching a woman performing this Dance is also beautiful. While a person might find the movements themselves stimulating, think about this...

Imagine what it feels like to push something the size of a watermelon out a hole the size of a lemon, or better yet, how about dropping a turd that big (watermelon sized) out your toosh while some 250 pound person is sitting on your belly? Not so erotic anymore?

Western Culture and Society idolizes Barbie appearing women- including the MILF's who have had personal trainers and plastic surgery... while anyone with an actual Mommy-body is no longer considered sexy or erotically appealing. Stretch marks are disgusting (there are erasing products for that now) and a belly of 'baby-fat' is gross. Breasts that sag a bit from increasing and decreasing through the natural cycle of breast-feeding are unappealing. (Which enhances the point that a boob-job is almost a necessity to be beautiful again.)

There are Cultures where stretch marks are a symbol of honor, (like a battle scar) and a woman with a bit of a belly from 'baby-fat' is incredibly sexy, and beautiful, and much more desireable than a woman who has never given birth. A woman who has given birth is of more value in her Society and is treated with respect because she CAN and HAS PROVEN that she is a life-bringer. She is capable of continuing the family heritage, of contributing to the creation of a family.

Saggy breasts are like stretch marks- a symbol of a woman's power to sustain life. She has proven that she is capable of providing for the life she has brought to the world and her family. It is a sign of loving and nurturing. We should be so blessed to have that perception throughout the world.

Bellydance in Western Culture deserves to be acknowledged for what it REALLY IS! It's not something we do to get our guys hot. (Though I have to admit that if that is the side effect when my guy watches me dance, I won't complain.) It's not about him when I do it, it's about me! It's about where I go when I'm in that space.

Bellydance is a way to honor myself as a woman, as a Mother, and another beautiful way for me to connect with my Inner-Goddess. It is a means of maintaining a healthier physical body, of re-building the abdominal muscular structure, of maintaining a positive self-body image, and boosting my own self-esteem. I do it for myself. I do it because I love to Dance, and I do it because I am beautiful, and I deserve to feel it!

<div>Between time with my daughter, time with my guy, dance classes, building costumes, studying the henna/jagua mehndi artsy stuffies, appointments, and work (at least I have the priorities straight!) and dance/zill/tat practice time at home, I've been so busy that I've just now gotten around to picking a background for the profile thingy!
I did find and post a message to ask if Rachel could squeeze in a workshop when she's here for the May show.... we could be so Blessed!!
I've been way more interested in making new friends than writing in this blogger thingy anyway!
I did get to go watch my friends in A Whole Pile of Hips perform at a show last night, and they all looked great! I was thrilled to see their great tribal costumes, and the performances were fun!!! Go Girlies!!!
