for dancers...

looking for some input...

I got so much satisfaction out of creating the zil technique cd that I'm feeling ready to tackle the larger challenge of creating a cd called "Ecstatic Dance". It's geared towards belly dancers that really want joyous improvisation without thought, perfect expression, and the great buzz you can only get from riding the music.
I'd like to hear from dancers that have questions they want answered on the subject, or opinions on what they'd like to see addressed. I really enjoy helping dancers get past obsticles in their path. This will help me cover all the bases on the new cd.
Thanx!
As this project progresses, I'll be posting updates on TurkuMusic.com

Joyous dancing...
Carla, one of the things I LOVE about you is watching you dance just for the pure joy of it! I see you at haflas, not taking center stage all of the time, but *really* dancing just for yourself and the love of the dance, often off in the shadows where you have more space. I've worked to make that connection, to not feel like I have to do things "right" all the time, but to just dance and "feel" it. If you could spread that happiness to other dancers, that would be a gift. :)

BTW, I just now have a pair of zils that I've broken in really well for your technique. :) Gotta get Mark to buy the DVD for my b-day. Your approach to zils is just... well... so unique and freeing.

Anyhoo, with dance, I'd love to hear about how you get past "right" and "wrong" (re: moves, steps, interpretation of music); how to begin improv; and how to share the love of the dance/ music, even w/ ppl who arent' familiar with it.

thanx
thanx so much for your input Rajni.
i came up with most of the techniques that i teach as i was attempting to help dancers that were struggling with some aspect of their dance. I would love to have any dancers that are struggling with improvisation to get with me at pennsic. that helps me to get things together for this cd.
i will give your question some thought and would love to work with you at pennsic. I will also bring some of the zil technique cd roms.

i'm hoping to find someone who teaches Zar. If you know anyone who will be at Pennsic that I can talk to about Zar for this cd project, please contact me.

The other person who does Zar has recently changed her name from Hauviette to something like Ahlam(trying to remember). She is usually on the SCA Middle Eastern Yahoo group, which I'll try to find a link to...

groups.yahoo.com/group/SCA...ssage/6056

that is one of the message threads... she's really nice and has some great information. Morocco's articles are good, also Karen Harding's stuff, if you can find it... I had a friend give me xerox'ed copies of articles that came out in Zhagareet in the 80's which I treasure dearly because I don't know where I would find them now... Plus one on the Shikkat, which is fascinating... anyway, I've done both Guedras with both you and Hauviette and enjoyed both! Oh, also, Kawakib also has some information out there and has taught them as well.

On another point, the estatic dance... I really identify with your description of "riding the music".. I feel that when I dance, its almost as if my consciousness has stepped back to watch, like some force is moving me, the drums and the melody are taking me where they want me to go. I'm always trying to help others to experience the joy that is just "letting go" and dancing because you love it, and am often surprised at how hard it is for so many people. Our troupe formed partly because the three of us that dance all feel this way when we really get going, like there is no "not dancing", dancing is what is, it is your body reacting to the force of the music surrounding it... I think helping others to get to a point where they can really let themselves flow into the dance and BE the music is one of the most important things we can share, and I'm looking forward to learning ways to help others get past their own boundaries that hold them back from freeing themselves into the flow... I think this aspect of the dance is overlooked far too often in many classes, technique is important too, i mean it gives you the means to express your emotions, but the ability to enjoy what you are doing and to share it is equally important, in my humble opinion...
