Boston Decom - Rocking the House

Boston Decom was awesome. What can I say, take all the fun and freakishness of the playa and cram it into a loft and you've got good times. I ran into people I met on the playa and people I go to school with. I love when you figure out folks from work or school are actually fun-loving freaks. As my friend said "it's like worlds collide". If only we could know about the secret lives of everybody we meet. . .

Found this - from 2001

"In this state, my words are like pearl handled wisdom.
They flow.
They are clean as air - light.

Japanse blacksmiths fold them into blades of gleaming steel.
One Hundred and fifty times."

It's amazing how you can think something sucks in the moment and not so bad a few years later! I never write poetry anymore, not sure why. . .

I miss the "Child of the 80s Book Group"

I miss reading stuff for fun. I miss my book group from LA. Is there anybody out there who wants to start a group? The only pre-req for our group in LA was that you had to know what a trapper keeper was.

"Why Buildings Fall Down"

Since taking materials and methods and structures in school, I have a new phobia. I decided to read "why buildings fall down" after the recent collapse of the ceiling panel in the big dig tunnel. One of the unexpected aspects of going to school for architecture is it gives you complete insecurity about shit holding up and standing up (ok, maybe I am just paranoid) but there are a lot of people who have to behave properly in the creation of a building. All it takes is one person to be out to make a buck or cut corners and you've got a dead lady in a car. How are you supposed to know when driving to the airport that the area you are driving under has been checked by Massport?

Anyway, "Why Buildings Fall Down" is a great read, even if you are not interested in engineering. I recommend it highly.

Ortizzle for Shizzle. . .

Well, here it is, the end of yet another Baseball season. I think Boston has finally come down from its two-year championship high. It just goes to show that when things are good, be sure to appreciate it, because the universe will certainly swing around and SPANK you! 2004 was the closest I've ever seen to mass euphoria in Boston, but now I can see the pessimism creeping back in. . .

However! There are some good spots. . .I have been following Red Sox baseball since the 1986 World Series between the Sox and Mets. In my family of left-wing Boston, artsy-fartsy folks and architects, I was regarded with polite curiosity. The best thing that happened in 2004 (besides the Sox winning it all) was that my dad became a baseballl fan. I can honestly say that I have spent more quality time with him in the last two years cursing and swearing at the television and taking in games at Fenway, than any other time in my life. I am grateful because when I was younger, he was working a high-profile architecture gig and was not around much. Good times, good times. . .

Another bright spot is David Ortiz. He's equal parts pimp and sunshine and my favorite ambassador of the city of Boston. Everybody bow down to the new Red Sox home run king!

Damn, it's going to be a long winter!
