about me
I'm either on my bike, on the mats of the kung fu school, or on a dance floor. Or drinking coffee and knitting. Give me bass, breaks, bacon and sunshine.
There used to be this office downtown that had a sign at the top of the stairs, positioned so that you see it as you're going up the stairs, but you could maybe miss it. It says "What would you attempt if you knew you wouldn't fail?" I know, its kind of cheesy, but everytime I see it, I just think "full scale revolution." Aim high, my friends.

Strange as it is for me to ask, I need a bike for burning man. No way am I bringing my Surly out there, (the bike. I'm sure I'll bring a bit of surly attitude.) but I don't have time to go seek out a really cheap bike, and can't spend the money on a used one at a shop. I know a bunch of you aren't going out to the playa this year- one of you maybe has a playa bike I can borrow? I promise to take good care of it- probably better than you would, to be honest.

I'm spending the weekend down in San Mateo, at Maker Faire. I'll be teaching some welding workshops and running around, having a crazy time. Come see me!

3 of the figures from Crude Awakening are down there, along with way too much other awesome stuff. Its going to be warm, sunny, and all sorts of dorky. makerfaire.com/
Yay! First stick driving lesson! And, come to think of it, first time ever driving a car in San Francisco. (theres some irony for you.) I think I got the hang of getting into 1st gear on a non-hill situation. I did have to ask which pedal was the gas... and that still didn't scare Rob Stokes- or at least he didn't show it. Funny, he taught me to weld too.

Just ya'll wait. I'll get the hang of this stick shift thing yet. I get a really big prize if I do.
Michigan got cold by the time I left. It even snowed a tiny bit. I hear they've got a couple inches now. (left just in time.)

Its always interesting to go outside the bubble we live in. Michigan's economy is for shit these days... have I mentioned this before? It is. The auto industry has long fled south of the border or elsewhere, turning union jobs into sweatshop. Hell, Ford's company slogan used to be "Every employee should make enough to drive himself and his family around in a Ford." W... read more
I suppose ceasing to refer to it as "the land of bitter cold dead" would help.

I haven't been back in Michigan for several years. My dad had an accident last week- broke his foot quite badly, and I've been recruited from SF to help out for the next 9 days. So here I am. Its cold. Theres still some leaves on the trees. It might snow. Its grey. I'm not a big fan of Michigan in the winter. But I'm trying to be in good spirits. I'm praying my laptop hard drive doesn't die- its been very sketchy... read more

sometimes i feel like her mean older sister, "no, you can't along with me and my boyfriend, dweeb!" way more often i feel like her naive younger sister, "wait, wait, take me, too. i wanna go, i wanna go! i promise i'll be quiet, and i'll carry all your stuff, too!" sometimes i feel like her mom, so proud of my honest, but sly, girl for caring for herself before others, living comfortably within both her masculine and feminine sides, having the courage to say no to things, but then the even greater courage to say yes to others. and in all of these roles, i feel incestuous. but that's not my fault. have you SEEN her ass? or, even worse (better?), grabbed it on the dance floor?
margaret has ignored me at all the right times. she has also paid attention when no one else did and i needed it most. her timing (as well as her aforementioned ass) is sublime. November 17, 2005
Ah the lovely Margaret... Margaret has got to be one of the toughest women I know. And not the Hollywood-prison-dyke-type of tough. I'm talking about the strong, self-sufficient, and take no shit from anyone type of woman. She can do it herself, thank you very much, but that doesn't mean that she wouldn't like to have your company. Seriously, I have mad respect for this girl, and halfway idolize the way she handles herself and the world around her. I only wish I got to see her more often, not just when there's loud music blaring. She can impart wisdom that would leave the Dali Llama gaping, and then have you chuckiling over the idiotic maschinations of some twitter-headed girlie girl she saw on the dance floor. (yay, I got to use machinations!) That's the other reason I especially like Margaret. She's not a girlie-girl by any means, but she is still a woman, through and through. Cheers to Margaret, a queen among women but no man's "lady".

I mostly call her Margaret. Sometimes Mags or Maggie but mostly I just call her. Across the ranks of slower moving people and particles that’s us right there cresting the horizon line out dancing on the breaking waves.
She was my housemate, woman at arms, chosen family at the very start and I loved every minute of it (even the cheese stealing). I’ve watched her grow in the traces right beside me; shoulders broader and stronger than my own and heart to beat worlds with, keeping me paced and honest. Pugnacious snark has Pokemon’ed into precision strength, earned beauty. Smarter and sharper than an army of Einstein Ginsu knives matching her might be an exercise in futility but according to the President’s council on physical fitness almost all of us could use some more exercise. I’d guard, hold, feed, carry, challenge, praise, join, battle, heal, poke, love her at less than a moment’s notice and never waste a thought on if she’d be/do the same to/4 me.
