There's nothing that captivates me more on a particular subject than its continuous transformation at the hands of many passionate editors. There are certain articles on Wikipedia (as in all media) that don't have very long life spans. This paragraph I post below is from projectcensored.org and points out the identity of some of these editors. On several different occasions I've come back to the same Wikipedia entry on subjects of political sensitivity, and I've read at times 3 or 4 complete overhauls in a matter of mere weeks. In particular there was an entry I came across on the subject of a controversial issue sitting at the forefront of physics that was so chillingly accurate and revealing my jaw dropped. References to all the right events, names of all the right people -I was so stunned I laughed a little before thinking of Save_Page_As in case the article disappeared before my eyes. Of course I didn't bother, and sure enough, a few weeks later when I returned to Vancouver it had been replaced with sanitized garbage. I've periodically revisited the entry to watch its repeated reconstruction, censorship, change of topic and subsequent reconstruction at the hands of those who care. I'm sharing this not because I consider watching all this more fascinating than any sports broadcast (which I do, by the way), but rather to let people know that in order to get the most from this online amateur encyclopedia one needs to drop in on particularly sensitive topics more than twice, sometimes thrice. And Save_Page_As is your friend.

CIA and FBI Edit Wikipedia

People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program. The changes violate Wikipedia’s conflict of interest guidelines. The tracing program, WikiScanner, was developed by Cal Tech graduate, Virgil Griffith, who traced numerous violations to FBI and CIA computers. According to spokesperson Sandy Ordonez of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia’s neutrality guidelines prohibit persons with close ties to an issue from contributing to or editing that entry.
