about me
Hmmm.... I'm actually a bit hard to get to know well. I like honest forthright conversation, good eye contact, good humor, affection. I like real people; not so hard for them to get to know me. But if I'm not quite sure who you are, you may never be quite sure who I am. I prefer being open, but have learned that many people aren't open and aren't comfortable with openness, so I may test the waters a bit before opening up.

I'm always interested in meeting people, but for me Tribe is an adjunct to the real world, not a substitute for it. Almost all of my Tribe friends are people I've met live more than once. The few others I have had valuable interactions with online. I'm not driven by friend count or profile hits, but rather quality of contact. I have pruned my list occasionally (and I'm sure the people pruned never realized it). So if you want to add me as a friend, I welcome it if you think there's an actual likelihood of us interacting. And when you make the request, say something about why you're doing so: was there something in common in my profile? Do we know someone in common? etc. I have otherwise taken to declining random requests...

Sorry for the political posts, but I'm traveling, which means more time waiting for service in restaurants, which means the Crackberry comes out to entertain me via the more obscure Reuters headlines that might not make it to the top.

And no, this isn't as long as it looks. Much of it is pasted article text.

So two items.

First, yesterday or the day before I heard on the radio news the comment that al-Maliki was generally supportive of the 16-month timeframe Obama set. When I heard t... read more

You'd think that nothing from the Shrub administration would cause surprise anymore. Well, I was surprised to see this. Maybe I'm late to the party. Defining abortion to include IUDs and the Pill... Holy fuck.

(OK, maybe that's slightly overstated... certainly nothing earthshattering...)

Years ago when I was young and did a lot of biz travel and thought I was the shit (sort of), I used to get all annoyed when stuff went wonky with arrangements. Didn't take too long to realize that a) I totally stress myself out that way, and b) things get resolved easier when you're nice than when you're mad. Duh.

Which is good, since pretty much nothing went right on arrival in Orlando at midnight tonight. A... read more

I'm crappy at remembering names. If we meet and I learn your name, please don't quiz me five seconds later. At least I know I'm not alone here.

At one point some years ago I managed a large group, and I worked hard to make sure I knew all of their names, and correct pronunciation (they came from all over the world). It gave me the illusion that I was good with names.

Now, over the last six months, I've met well over a hundred new people. Some for just a hour meeting. Some at cocktail ev... read more

Man, what's with the fires this year?

I spent a couple hours helping clear Scotch Broom and old dry timber on a woodsy property this weekend. One of the caretakers said something that sounded odd at first: "We had so much rain this winter that the underbrush has grown thick."

Wait, so much rain? Aren't we in a drought? Well, not quite. We had some early very rainy months, followed by a dry end to the winter. That must be the worst combination ever: grow lots o shit and then dry it out.... read more
