about me
Hmmm.... I'm actually a bit hard to get to know well. I like honest forthright conversation, good eye contact, good humor, affection. I like real people; not so hard for them to get to know me. But if I'm not quite sure who you are, you may never be quite sure who I am. I prefer being open, but have learned that many people aren't open and aren't comfortable with openness, so I may test the waters a bit before opening up.

I'm always interested in meeting people, but for me Tribe is an adjunct to the real world, not a substitute for it. Almost all of my Tribe friends are people I've met live more than once. The few others I have had valuable interactions with online. I'm not driven by friend count or profile hits, but rather quality of contact. I have pruned my list occasionally (and I'm sure the people pruned never realized it). So if you want to add me as a friend, I welcome it if you think there's an actual likelihood of us interacting. And when you make the request, say something about why you're doing so: was there something in common in my profile? Do we know someone in common? etc. I have otherwise taken to declining random requests...

Just saw a press release from a German training company... The name of the company is Qaqadu... Doesn't survive the trip to the US very well, although at least they didn't add an extra "du" at the end. But the answer to, "Do you know any people that do a good job on technical training?" might be, "The people at Qaqadu do."

Wonder if these guys need some marketing help... :)

While I was having lunch with the team in the Netherlands one day, I got a lecture on how dangerous it is to reheat spinach. While I'll readily admit to being ignorant of all kinds of facts, it surprised me how much this seemed to be common knowledge there, while, for me, it was completely out of the blue. And it's not a minor thing; reading various other accounts, some people treat it like eating something with botulism; it's thought of as seriously toxic.

Did a bit of research the other ... read more

I've noticed a Dutch characteristic. When drinking in a small group, they will. Not. Move. For anything or anyone.

Throngs of people this evening in the narrow Stratumseind nightclub district. People are trying to squeeze through, and there would be room if the little knots of people would tighten up - it's actually not THAT crowded. But they don't. They don't as much as acknowledge that there are people pushing and prodding to open a way to get through. It's like they're in their little c... read more

I seem to have this fight going with my camera or with "getting the shot." Or they have one with me. The camera finds the worst times to glitch. Or my "scene" finds the worst time to change.

For example, I'll be doing a quick set of pictures with the motordrive to capture the "before during and after" of some brief event so I can pick the best shot afterwards, and the camera will work fine until right at the most critical part of the event and then the auto-focus will get confused for no ... read more

I've been in a noisy hotel for most of my stay this time, culminating, as I noted, with Yell Day. For unrelated reasons, I changed hotels yesterday for the remainder of my stay. Given that I was staying for several days in a time when most of the hotel guests would be there just for the marathon, I was upgraded to a suite in a building separate from the others, quite far from any road or noise sources. It's quite nice.

Ah, my first chance at a really good night's sleep, undisturbed by nois... read more
