Last night House of Tarab played 2 shows. 1st was at cafe ibex. We are trying to get a monthly going but we've been so busy recording the marketing has really suffered. The audience for ibex was great all 32 of them... small crowd but really energetic. i like doing intimate shows but come on we had Elisa Gamal she is one of the best dances in town... last one there was sold out! well what can you do....anyway it was cool David, busted out the mizmar we did a bunch of saidi and debke, i think for the 1st time we had the Whole audience on the floor. that rocked.
We finished at 11pm, packed up, headed to downtown pioneer square to play for Delilah and Tayissa at the Utilikilts 7 year itch party...a total cicrus of acts, fire, dance, comedy, freaks etc,... we we got there around midnight and act on stage was stapling dollar bills to them selves along with help from the crowd ...the bigger the # on the bill the more disturbing the area it was attached to.... if you know what i mean... think jackass the movie hehe. picture this: a free party full of kilt wearing pieced tattooed modern primitive burningman crowd; and in walks House of Tarab minus David, tuxedos, fez'es...but this crowd is cool, not even an askance look.. we go on at 1 am the crowd is pumped, drunk, not to drunk though, and ready for...well their not sure but ready...the pain freaks, some comedy acts, a bunch of pounding house and tekno.... then we get up on stage tux'es, fez'ez, violin, oud, tabl balady and darbuka.. the audience is dumbfounded at the site of us... we bust out with ala bali a heavy saidi folk tune...eyebrows raise in the audience...Tayissa enters stage(this is a smalllll stage, 4 of us with instruments leaves about a 2 by 6 space..she rocks,a sort of neo tribal costuming, tight dancing with good interpretation. She kills the crowd, they are screaming, she exits gracefully and the violin takes over, Sallah is on fire he is playing in nahawand then saba, violin screaming in agony, Delilah enters.... its all over now the audience is silent, jane and i start a slow wahda to compliment his feel...Delilah is milking every note, she is the music... at this moment you could hear a pin drop in a crowd of several hundred. he plays, does his thing and then the qafla, we close... a moment of silence like an observation for the dead... then this crowd comes back to it's senses, an explosion of screaming and applause. We go to aziza, crowd pressed against the stage still screaming the accolades , a drum solo and exit with tuta....definitely one of the most fun shows i've done!

My Testimonials

November 22, 2006

I met Erik on Valentines day 2004. We were both refugees from fallen relationships. He introduced himself to me very politely because he was going to play drum for me in a show Indigo was putting on come April. I met him next in Bellingham the day of the show and (darn we sure wished we had a video copy of that performance. We remember it as hot!) Next Erik heard from drummer Jane Hall that I needed help for the Fremont Solstice Parade. Erik volunteered to lead the drummers in the Parade and he was a Goddess send. He proved very dependable. Showed up 3 times a week. It wasn’t until the very last beat of the parade on the hill side of Gasworks Park that cupids arrow hit me. I couldn’t get him out of my mind all of a sudden. We finally got together the night of the after party for the parade a couple weeks later on July 7th 2004. We fell in love and have been inseparable ever since. It’s been almost 3 years and I must say we seem to make each other very happy. He is sincerely one of the nicest, sexiest men I have ever met and each day is a delight. He knows how to make me happy and I try my best to make him happy.

what to say about erik...there's so much to him. erik is one of the most genuine people i have ever met and one of the best lifelong friends i hope to keep. an amazing drummer and fantastic bass player (little know fact, he's been playing over 15 years and kicks ass!). if you're a dancer, get him to play for you...he's very in tune, and easy to connect with. anyhow i'm babbling now. i could write a book on how cool this guy is but there's not enough time :)

Erik, my man! You are just too sweet & a sincerely nice guy. You've always been warm & welcoming to me, the old man & the kids & that is greatly appreciated!

You Rak on the doumbek and you rock on the Bass! ;-) It has been a giant pleasure to know you for the past 3+ years & looking forward to that continued friendship...

Rak On!

How come Erik doesn't have a bunch of testimonials? For shame!

Erik is a kick ass human being in general. He's a great person, a great drum teacher and a great drum band leader. He puts up with more crap from us drum banders than what he has to, which is admirable in itself.

Anyone that is serious about Middle Eastern Drumming in Seattle should be taking a class from him, period. He knows his stuff when it comes to the art of the darbouka and has studied with some of the best. I'm proud to be a member of the band!
