cake school volunteers?
(blog entry)
For those who volunteered to be cake school guinea pigs, and there were many of you, now is your chance. Downside is, it's in the middle of a Thursday and is in St Helena. For my current class, Restaurant and Production Desserts, my teammate and I...

It occurs to me that a few of you do not know that, in January, I quit my job with the fearful Jesuits and started culinary school. So, with everyone current, an update.
It has been a month now and things are going well. I am as happy as I can ... read more

The answer, as Deep Thought tells us, to life. Also, to the universe. And, since we are speaking of it, to everything. I am hoping Deep was right. Just a few days into February, I bold... read more

My favorite Bill Harris story
(blog entry)
Some time in 1987, maybe, he decided to buy this old Triumph motorcycle. He paid three hundred bucks for it or so. He asked me to go down with him and ride it back to his house, as he did not have a license at the time. The poor thing was an abomi...

For my current class, Restaurant and Production Desserts, my teammate and I are to serve six guests a five-course dessert menu. I need to recruit two of those guests. The date is 31 August, next Thursday, and the time is mid-day. It will take an hour or so and you will be asked to fill out an evaluation.

It has been a month now and things are going well. I am as happy as I can remember ever being. My daily toil now results in cake. Or bread. We made croissants today. Far more satisfying. I am still living in Alameda and the school in St Helena. It is not the most pleasant commute I have known. I hope to move soon, but a... read more

The answer, as Deep Thought tells us, to life. Also, to the universe. And, since we are speaking of it, to everything. I am hoping Deep was right. Just a few days into February, I boldly predict that it will be more fortuitous a year than last, which seemed have sucked the joy out of many dear people. We just have to make it through February. Tom Robbins says, of my favorite month, this: "They say that February is the shorte... read more
Some time in 1987, maybe, he decided to buy this old Triumph motorcycle. He paid three hundred bucks for it or so. He asked me to go down with him and ride it back to his house, as he did not have a license at the time. The poor thing was an abomination before England. It had been chopped, badly, with long forks covered with stainless covers and handlebars, octagonal in cross-section, that placed your hands at shoulder height and about eight inches apart. It had a Maltese Cross rear tail ligh...

It's rare that I run across somebody whom I can truly say this about, but Scott is one true Gentleman. I tip my hat to him and I'm mighty glad to know him.
