about me
"Hey, Mom," said my 21-year-old daughter one evening while we were working out at the local gym. "Want to give this new belly dance class a try?" "Why not?" I replied. "Sounds like it might be kinda fun."
Little did I know that I was setting myself up for a full-blown addiction - one that would change my life, expand my horizons, and bring me alongside some of the most unique, fun-loving, and amazing people I've had the pleasure to know thus far! Funny where one seemingly innocent suggestion can lead!
I am so lucky to be able to study belly dance with two wonderful instructors. The classes I'm taking at the moment are Egyptian/Oriental style, Saidi/cane dancing, and Gypsy Caravan Tribal. I've recently begun dancing with a troupe, and have been having a wonderful time learning from, and with, my truly wonderful troupe-mates Maria and Tarilyn. I can totally relate to the "addiction" my fellow bellydance aficianadoes speak of with such affection and reverence.

When I'm not dancing; hanging out with my husband, my friends, my two 20-something daughters and possibly my sons-in-law; getting into mischief with my preschool-aged granddaughter; volunteering at my church; enjoying outdoor recreation in any season; or posing as a mild-mannered receptionist in a large downtown office building, I can be found curled up with a good book at the library or bookstore. B&N is my happy place!

I am so very blessed to have my life graced with the two best friends anyone could ever hope or wish to have. They are the sisters that biology didn't happen to give me, but are truly my sisters in spirit. Last week, I had to go to the hospital for a biopsy. When I had gone in for my first mammogram a couple of weeks ago, I was called back for another because the radiologist had seen something on the results that typically warrants further investigation. As soon as he looked at the result... read more

If I don't seem to be on Tribe quite as much these days, it's because my place of employment has gone and put a block on the site. Well, actually, I can go to the homepage, but when I try to sign in, they put up the big "DO NOT ENTER!" screen. Bummer! Uhhhhhh...not that I surf the web at work or anything......
And my evenings are usually so jam-packed with classes and practice and maybe even a little bit of domestic activity from time to time, that I've gotta grab fleeting moments when I ... read more

Have you ever been out and about, and suddenly found yourself surrounded by a noisy, adoring throng? It happened to me today, and I must say, I wasn't quite prepared. It was almost scary, actually. There were literally dozens in this crowd, so excited to see me, moving as one enitity with all those adoring eyes - it just took me completely by surprise! For every tentative step I took in retreat, they would take two or three steps advancing my way. I suppose next time I go near a river wh... read more

Another autumn is upon us. To me, this time of year has always felt like a time for new beginnings, adventures...whatever! I think that feeling has its origin back in my school days, when the shorter days, cooler evenings, and changing leaves were all part of what made up that annual ritual known as the "new school year." In more recent years, I have taken two trips overseas, both in the fall, so the memories of those wonderful journeys begin to whisper to my mind and heart as the weather ... read more

Smooshy Goodness

I've been keeping this under my hat for a little too long now. I've invented a cocktail using my new favorite spirit, Passoa. I've shared it with some of my friends and dance colleagues, and they're all quite smitten with it. I figured I should probably quit being so stingy and go ahead and get the word out so others can enjoy its Passion-fruity goodness. Before sharing the recipe, though, I must tell you how it got its name. My good friends Crystal and Denise brought me my first bottle of Passoa when they returned from a Caribbean cruise. I tried using it in a few things, and finally hit upon a combination that I really liked. One evening I talked Crystal and Denise into accompanying me to my beginner belly dance class. Before going to class, we had a few sips of my new beverage with dinner. I told them, "This will help us to get smooshy!" That's the highly technical term that my bellydance teacher, Jeannette, uses to refer to keeping your knees soft, etc. while dancing. I told them, "I don't have a name for it yet, though. What do you suggest?" and they said, "Why not just keep it simple and call it the Smooshy?" Thus the Smooshy was born.

The ingredients in one Smooshy are:
2 oz. of ruby red grapefruit juice cocktail, 1 1/2 oz. Passoa Passion Fruit liqueur, 1 oz. gold rum, and 1/2 oz. Rose's sweetened lime juice. Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass; garnish with a lime slice.
Cheers!
