about me
I am a former SF Bay Area live music freek who burned out on my corportate BS job and moved with my wife to Guatemala to begin a new career teaching English in faraway places. Then Carley got pregnant, so we moved back to the US and we're currently lying low in the Deep South. Our son Rowan was born on 9/9/06. Social life? This is it for now. Diapers, baby!!

Sorry I'm so slow at updating this Tribe space. I'm really much better at e-mail. Anyways, Carley and I re-entered the US a month ago, and already it seems like it was a lifetime ago. We're thoroughly settled into our new apartment in Tupelo MS (birthplace of Elvis Presley) and we're already settled into new jobs.

Believe it or not, I am a substitute teacher at the local high school! Remember how in high school people would always abuse the sub. Well...you can just imagine the discipline issues I'm dealing with. Actually, you probably can't, unless you're also a teacher. Anyways, classes started a week ago, and right now I'm teaching biology to 10th graders. Also I'm enrolling in a teacher certification program to get a license to teach math. It's really not what I'd most want to teach, but for now it's the most practical. What can I say, math is easy for me, and it will make me money. Also I'm going to start teaching English classes to Mexican immigrants in the evenings, two nights a week. Busy busy busy.

As for Carley, she is now the Executive Director for a new non-profit here in Tupelo that will provide social services (such as English classes) to Mexican immigrants, since so many have moved to the area in recent years. As you might have guessed, she's the one who hired me to be the English teacher.

The pregnancy is still going super-smooth, and Carley is feeling great. Less than a month-and-a-half left til "Li'l Elvis" arrives.

After living for 14 months in Guatemala, Carley and I are happy to announce that we are OUTTA HERE!

It's been a fantastic experience for us here. We've met some amazing people, and we've really enjoyed some of the aspects of our "third-world" lifestyle. Needless to say, there are plenty of "less pleasant" aspects of living in a developing country, especially the pollution (they don't have emission controls yet), not to mention the litter, noise, intolerable music, etc. We won't miss any of that.

So, our plan from here is to drive through Mexico for the next 3 weeks or so, exploring some places we missed on our previous roadtrip more than a year ago. Specifically, we're planning to check out the Yucatan peninsula, as well as the largest metropolis in the world, Mexico City.

We expect to arrive back in the US on or around July 21. Our first stop in the US will be Austin, TX, to visit a good friend and hopefully see some good live music. After that, we'll be settling in (gulp) Mississippi, at least until after the baby is born in October.

Needless to say, this is a very exciting time for us!

Look for updates on our blog soon...
