In daily life we see people around who are happier than we are, people who are less happy. Some may be doing praiseworthy things and others causing problems. Whatever may be our usual attitude toward such people and their actions, if we can be pleased with others who are happier than ourselves, compassionate toward those who are unhappy, joyful with those doing praiseworthy things, and remain undisturbed by the errors of others, our mind will be very tranquil. Additionally, I have a beautiful house with a huge saguaro tree in the front and grapefruit, orange and cumquat trees in the back, rose bushes and jasmine, too. Unfortunately, knowing that I am blessed and still being depressed makes me feel like a spoiled brat. Let's not spea... read more
I've heard that depression is anger turned inward. I must have a lot of anger. Is it wrong for me to be angry that this world isn't fair? If it is true that we make our own reality, then how is it that I've found myself in one that allows so much ugliness to seep in?

I used to teach elementary school, but fell into a deep depression when I found that I was not part of the solution but part of the problem. Institutionalized public education stunts children's creativity and potential. I hated seeing children not living up to their potential. I didn't want to bear witness to it and resigned from the Los Angeles Unified School District.
