Student Showcase In Plymouth
Kali Tribe are holding a student show case on Saturday 22nd November at the Plymouth College of Art and Design. We are working along with the College and will have students who will be selling and showing their work, a souk , so if you have some stuff to sell why not bring it along. We are hoping that the students will create some of the backdrops for the stage , sound, lighting etc and to video the event. Should be a great evening. We are looking for students of all styles of bellydance to perform on this evening, which will make the performances interesting and entertaining for the audience. So how about you first Solo, or group performance, We would like the content of the show to be as varied as possible so be as creative as you can. We have booked the theatre for dress rehearsal on the Friday evening so you can have a practice.
Its a chance to perform to a theatre audience who will be supportive and welcoming.

MAJMA 07
MAJMAMajma has been going now for nine years and came out of a dance festival which was held in Glastonbury. Next year will be its tenth aneversary and Lynn who started it has now passed it over to Raheesha. The planning of next years Majma is well under way. This years Majma offered many great teachers for all styles of bellydance. Being a tribal fan the highlight for me was the opportunity to learn from Carolina Nericcio the director of Fat Chance Bellydance Comp. There was a host of workshops, seminars and shows on Friday, Saturday evening, followed by club Majma. Shimmy On the popular dance showcase when dancers had the opportunity to perform. Oh! And I can’t forget to tell you about the wonderful Souk which offered all manner of goodies.
There was a bit of concern this year the Majma would not go ahead however it did and I and my friend Sharon Heard booked to go. We were sent out the choices of workshops and seminars we wanted to attend and we both took every chance to take Carolina’s workshops. You did not get to know which workshops you would be attending until you arrived at Majma, registered and received your pack. Naturally we could not wait to check out what workshops we were in. Quick check, yes we both got all the workshops and seminars we wanted. On the Friday evening following some great food we headed for the Souk drawn by all the glitz and sparkles. We met up with other dancers we knew, including some members of Gypsy Fire. The evening show was about to start and all the dancers who were teaching this week-end performed. The included Carolina Nericcio & Megan Gavin from Fat Chance Bellydance, Charareh Pourzand, Anne White, Raheesha, Nawarra and Maria d’ Silva who kept us all mesmerised with their stunning performances. Following the interval Raksan performed for 46 minutes homage to Glastonbury which was specially devised for Majma 07. Her performance kept everyone enthralled she did the wild woman, circus and ritual, modern dance and vaudeville, erotic entertainment and drama all featured in her performance, brilliant.
The next morning we were up bright and early for the day’s workshops, we both attended Carolena and Megha’s workshops which were great and pack full of eager tribal dancers. Carolena and Megha were great teachers. We covered tribal improvisational choreography, spins and turns, tribal drills for leading and following a great days dancing. It was then back to the B&B to get freshened up and changed for the evening. We had another great meal and the Saturday evening entertainment. The entertainment was Sabrina – a dance drama by Caroline Afifi and her dance company. Sharon and I armed with bottle of wine took up seats on the floor to be near the front The show was about Sabrine a fifteen year old girl who works in the dressing room of a Cairo nightclub. This was a tale of her adolescent journey of discovery in the changing political world of belly dancing. This was a great show with narrations and the dancers performed brilliantly, with beautiful costumes. Much gorgeousness! It was now time to hit the dance floor at Club Majam and the live band. Day two saw Sharon attending the Arabic Flamenco workshop with Raheesh and I set off to do some dancing with a sword with Raksan. We both enjoyed the workshops which were fun and challenging. It was good that we attended some different workshop so we could share what we had learned and bring them into our performances. We also attend a seminar which was led by Carolena on music for tribal dance. We were very tired and had a two hour drive back to Devon so we did not stay for the shimmy on show. We chatted all the way back about our week-end, and felt that attending these things really brings your dancing on and renews your enthusiasm.
Roll on the next event!
