about me
I'm the head RVT (veterinary technician) at San Diego Zoo. In all I've been with the zoo for ... 27 years? Now that shows a lack of imagination! As the head tech I'm kind of lower-lower-lower-middle management, which is usualy a pain in the ass. I'm in a position where I can kind of influence where the boat sails by either dragging my foot in the water, helping to paddle a bit, or getting out of the way of a favorable wind. When things get discouraging, I have to ask the question, out of all the people on earth, how many physically touched a tiger today?

At various times, I've also been (part-time) lead emergency tech at a small animal referral practive. Proud of that work. Gave me the opportunity to really use my skill and knowlege and make a difference in an animal's life, and in the lifes of the people who love them. Too bad the pay was so low, I'd still be there.

Tend to go all in on some project, until it's about half completed. Then get bored and start doing something else. Eventually come back with a new eye and finish them better than the original plan. Have a very dry sense of humor. People often don't know if I'm being serious, until they realize I'm rarely serious.

I've been sort of restoring a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse. It's one of those projects I work on until I get bored. Had Road Race Motors put in a new engine a couple years ago. Working on the stereo now. I put in amps and a sub, but now tracking down an intermittant whine. And the display on the head unit went blank. It plays, just won't tell me what's playing. Next will probably be new upholstery. In the works are trasmission, gauges, exhaust and suspension.

I have five cats right now. Three are Egyptian Mau's and two are rescues I got from the emergency clinic. Had a couple of dogs while growing up, but cats have always been around. I tend not to notice the cat hair everywhere. Even in the refrigerator. My soul has cat hair on it. Do miss having a dog, especially when I take care of other people's dogs. Just don't have room for a dog in my condo with five cats. So I get my dog fix vicariously. Sometimes I like the dog more than the person.

Hate phones. Love email. Love surfing the web and how I can learn about something new, then have a new word or idea send me off on a tagent for an hour or two.

Okay, I'm bored with this. What's on TV?

You can't prove nothin'

Re: Pointers! (in 2010 Burning Man Virgins) Wow, I'm only been a couple times and it's still great to hear it first hand from a first-timer, Carla. Experience. It's all about the experience, and only you are responsible for your experience. Be prepared for the environment as much as you ... read more

Re: Pointers! (in 2010 Burning Man Virgins) Jaron has some great advice, but as with anything, there's more than one way. If you're doing it right and drinking plenty of water, you'll need to pee at least twice during your sleep period (not necessarily at night). I find a good pee bottle ... read more

Re: Virgin here, volunteer for 2010 (in 2010 Burning Man Virgins) Welcome Julie, jonathan, Fanci … I wanted to go to BM for years. Read all I could find but didn't know anyone. Finally at age 50 I just decided I was going. No excuses. Alone if necessary. I ended up camping "alone" with Hushville. Rather t... read more

Re: Halloween! (in A Circle of Merry Folk) I was Alex DeLarge of Clockwork Orange. Not original, but after too may years of wizards and jesters, it was fun explaining ultraviolence to my mom.

Re: Please give sweet comf welcome to Elinor … Josh … Crow … and Jeff … (in A Circle of Merry Folk) Hey there Hi there all. Mucho thanks for the welcomes. I've been mostly off Tribe the last year or two, but I'll try to be around more often. This looks like a fun bunch.

Still waters can be shallow

Lloyd is not doing so great. Turns out the insulin insufficiency was due to a tumor on his pancreas, which extends over part of the stomach, liver and intestines. And there are mets in his lungs. Doesn't get much worse than that. Since it's so extensive, surgery is not likely to be effective. Chemo. I've seen so many cats suffer along for months, miserable with chemotherapy, to prolong their lives for a few months. Maybe a year. I can't see prolonging his life by sacrificing his quali... read more

It's been a couple of months. Lloyd is no longer on insulin. Just a diet change has gotten him under control. He's sort of okay about checking his blood glucose. I nick the marginal ear vein to get a drop of blood. Amazing how small a sample the glucometer needs, but it's still annoying getting the blood. Even the day I ran a glucose curve by getting a sample every couple of hours, he never hid or avoided me. I'd sit in the kitchen chair and call him over. He'd hop in my lap, then giv... read more

He had probably lost a bit of weight before, and I didn't notice. When I got back from a weekend trip to LA a couple weeks ago it was scarey how much weight he had lost. Probably at least a couple pounds. Though with just a bathroom scale there wasn't a normal weight to compare too. Bottom line, he has diabetes. I had plenty of diabetic patients during the years at the e hospital (and even a few at the zoo). This will be quite a challenge to treat a diabetic pet of my own. He's been on insuli... read more
