"Contrary to appearances, the landscape is not on fire. "

This is just a cloudy sunset over open countryside in France," says Patrice Arnaudet, who took the picture on July 13th using a Canon 350D digital camera. "There was no fire."

Blame the trickery on Rayleigh scattering.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/Hbase/atmos/blusky.html
Tiny particles in the air, including air molecules themselves, scatter blue light more so than red. When the sun sets, so much blue is scattered, the remaining rays can become extremely reddened. In Arnaudet's photo, Rayleigh-scattered sunbeams are painting the clouds the color of wildfire...."

I always report them at the US Geological Survey website. It makes me feel like I'm doing something important. Ha!

										<div>"Tricky Moon Shadows " (Tricky... he meant... that's for you newcomers)
By Mike Salaway

"Amateur astronomer Mike Salway of Central Coast, Australia, woke up before dawn on May 25th to photograph Jupiter. The giant planet materialized in the eyepiece of his 12-inch telescope along with giant moon Ganymede and a deep, dark moon shadow just behind it on Jupiter's cloudtops. Contrary to appearances, however, the shadow did not come from Ganymede.

As Ganymede was transiting Jupiter, Europa cast a shadow apparently nearby. Meanwhile, off to the right, Io was about to be eclipsed by the much larger shadow of Jupiter itself," he says. So many moons, so many shadows! It can get a little tricky, "especially at 5 o'clock in the morning."

Yet 5 o'clock in the morning is the best time to see Jupiter.

Train your telescope on the brilliant "morning star" in the constellation Sagittarius and see if you can sort things out"

    </a>
										<div>"Today, a massive solar prominence is delighting amateur astronomers with its rapid mutations. "I've seen lots of prominences in my time, but this one is totally amazing," reports Pete Lawrence of Selsey, UK. "Each half-hour shot I took of it recorded large structural changes." One photo, he insists, looks like a War of the Worlds martian.

"That's the best part of solar astronomy, it's never the same," adds Greg Piepol of Rockville, Maryland. Readers, if you have a solar telescope, look now!"

										<div>"Quiet Sun: Experts say the sun is quiet. Indeed, the 11-year solar cycle is at low ebb. But just how quiet can a 1027 ton nuclear explosion ever be?

Consider the following photo taken yesterday by Pete Lawrence of Selsey, UK ( just consider it...if you will)
Everywhere you look, something is happening. Along the horizon, flame-like prominences taller than Earth itself wave hypnotically. (like wow man, I'm entranced!)

The stellar surface looks like a shag carpet; each strand is a Texas-sized jet of gas shooting up from the inferno below. (oooh-la-la shag carpet..those were the days)

At the right edge of the image floats a sinuous cloud of solar hydrogen held aloft by dynamic magnetic forces. At center stage is a bright patch of magnetism that just a few days ago became unstable and exploded, sending a "solar tsunami" (see previous Tsunami post for details) shock wave through the sun's atmosphere.

That's what we mean by "quiet sun."

    </a>
										<div>"No sunspots? No problem.

On April 26th the blank sun unleashed a solar flare without the usual aid of a sunspot.

At 1408 UT, Earth-orbiting satellites detected a surge of X-rays registering B3.8 on the Richter scale of solar flares. Shortly thereafter, SOHO coronagraphs recorded a coronal mass ejection (CME) billowing away from the sun.

The expanding cloud could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field late on April 28th or 29th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras when it arrives.

This strange solar flare came from a patch of sun where magnetic fields were not intense enough to form a visible sunspot (sunspots are made of magnetism). Nevertheless, magnetic fields were present with sufficient energy and instability to produce a powerful explosion. NASA's twin STEREO spacecraft, observing the sun from widely separated vantage points, recorded a million mph shock wave or "solar tsunami" spreading from the blast site through the sun's atmosphere

    </a>
										<div>I believe the torch is due in San Francisco on Wednesday but I may be wrong.

Protests Cut Short ( Paris) Olympic Relay

"French security officials have been forced to cut short the Paris leg of the Olympic torch relay following anti-Chinese protests along the route.The torch was extinguished three times due to the protests before being taken ON A BUS to the relay's end point.

The cancellation comes after 37 people were arrested in London as protesters disrupted the torch relay on Sunday.The Olympic flame is being carried through 20 countries before arriving for the Beijing Games in August.The torch relay started to go wrong almost from the start, despite the presence of 3,000 police along the route, riding motorcycles, jogging or on skates.

A member of the French Green party was restrained by police after attempting to grab the torch from the first of Paris's 80 torch bearers, former world 400 metres hurdles champion Stephane Diagana, Reuters news agency said.

"Nothing's happening as it was meant to," Mr Diagana told French TV.

"It's a shame. It's sad because of what this symbol represents but it can be explained by the context we're aware of."

Police were forced three times to put out the torch and carried it onto a bus, as police cleared protesters from the route.
On the second occasion, the flame was being relayed out of a Paris traffic tunnel by an athlete in a wheelchair when it was taken onto a BUS because protesters booed and began chanting "Tibet", the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The flame itself has been kept alight the whole time in a safety lantern.

Later, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe cancelled a ceremony to mark the torch relay as Green party activists hung a Tibetan flag and a black banner depicting the Olympic rings as handcuffs from the Hotel de Ville (city hall).

Activists have hung Tibetan flags or the black banners from several Paris landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, the city hall (Hotel de Ville) and Notre Dame cathedral.Several hundred protesters have been involved in the demonstrations, near the Eiffel Tower and along the torch's zig-zag route through Paris to a stadium in the south of the city. Finally, after several delays, security officials decided to put the torch on a BUS to take it to Stade Charlety.

Speaking in Beijing earlier, IOC President Jacques Rogge said he was concerned over both the recent unrest in Paris and the torch protests.

"The International Olympic Committee has expressed its serious concern and calls for a rapid peaceful resolution in Tibet," Mr Rogge said.
He condemned the attempts to disrupt the torch relay, saying violent protests, "for whatever reason," are "not compatible with the values of the torch relay or the Olympic Games".

China said the protests during London's Sunday torch relay were the work of "a few Tibetan separatists" attempting "to sabotage" the event, AP reported.

London's relay saw protesters trying to douse and even snatch the Olympic flame as athletes and celebrities carried it through the city.
The demonstrations have been sparked by China's security crackdown in Tibet following a series of protests against Chinese rule which swept the region last month.

Tibetan exile groups say Chinese security forces killed dozens of protesters. Beijing says about 19 people were killed in rioting.
The torch was lit in Olympia, Greece, on 24 March and will go through 20 countries before being carried into the opening ceremony at the Beijing Games on 8 August.

Olympic Torch "Relay" in London (HA!)

    </a>
										<div>" Thirty-five arrests have been made after clashes between pro-Tibet protesters and police as the Olympic torch made its way through London. Protests over China's human rights record began soon after the relay began at Wembley, and prompted an increasing police presence through the city.

One protester tried to snatch the torch from former Blue Peter host Konnie Huq.

After an unpublicised change to the route, the Chinese ambassador carried the torch through Chinatown.
It later made an UNSCHEDULED MOVE onto A DOUBL-DECKER BUS.

A protective ring of 10 Chinese flame attendants and fluorescent-jacketed police officers surrounded the torchbearers at all times, with additional uniformed officers joining at potential flashpoints along the route. Police decided the torch should travel along Fleet Street to St Paul's Cathedral by bus, rather than held by a runner, after it was surrounded by a large group of protesters.
....
Outside Downing Street there were chaotic scenes as former Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis took the flame to No 10.

Prime Minister, Gordon Brown greeted the torch outside Number 10 despite coming under pressure to boycott the parade and the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. However he did not hold it.
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said the prime minister's involvement was "wholly inappropriate" until China opened talks with the Dalai Lama.

....
The flame will complete the London leg of its journey with a finale event at the O2 Arena. It will then leave for PARIS...."

(Where I assume protests will abound ; )

BBC News, Beijing

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7327763.stm

"Chinese campaigner Hu Jia could have been given five or more years for "subverting the state" - in the end he was sent to jail for less.
Mr Hu's wife, Zeng Jinyan, said he had been subjected to "endless questions"

But his lawyer, Li Fangping, was not happy. "Although he's only been sentenced to THREE-AND- A HALF YEARS, I still cannot accept this judgement," he told reporters outside the Beijing courthouse.

Before he heard the verdict, Mr Li was even blunter. :

As a lawyer, I think Hu Jia is innocent and should be released.

Hu Jia was sent to prison for what many other people WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER A CRIME he was convicted for writing FIVE ARTICLES and giving TWO INTERVIEWS.

The 34-year-old has long sought to publicise what he believes are injustices in China, concerning the environment, HIV/Aids and HUMAN RIGHTS.

Beijing's First Intermediate People's Court INTERPRETED THESE ACTS as an attempt to subvert "the state's political and socialist systems".

HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIIONS see it differently - they believe the Chinese authorities put the campaigner in prison to silence him ahead of the Olympic Games.

Campaigners gather Hu Jia has become perhaps China's most prominent activist, and journalists from all over the world waited outside the court to hear his sentence.

REPORTERS were NOT ALLOWED INSIDE THE COURT to hear it read out for themselves.

Several other campaigners, mostly people trying to highlight their own particular grievances, had also gathered outside the court to protest.

Petitioners gathered at the court to push their causes. One woman wanted justice for her son, claiming he had been beaten to death.
But most people had come to hear the judgement for Mr Hu. About half an hour after entering the court to hear the sentence, his lawyer Mr Li came out to tell journalists what it was.

As well as being sent to prison, Mr Hu was deprived of POLITICAL RIGHTS for ONE year. The lawyer said his client and his family would decide later whether or not to appeal. Under Chinese law, they have 10 days to make up their minds.

A little later, Hu Jia's wife, Zeng Jinyan, also emerged from the court after attending the hearing with other family members.
Holding back tears, she said she had not been allowed to see her husband.
She added that her husband had a liver complaint, which had been exacerbated by his time in detention.

"There were TIRING, ENDLESS QUESTIONS WITHOUT SLEEP she said.
"When I saw him last, the most important thing I said to him was 'take good care of your health'."

Ms Zeng, who herself is a well-known rights campaigner, added that her husband showed little emotion when the sentence was announced. Hardening stance :In an article published by Xinhua,

China's state-run news agency, the authorities laid out their case against Mr Hu:

"Mr Hu's jailing has caused an international outcry"
The article said Mr Hu wrote articles criticising the Chinese political system, and ACCEPTED INTERVIEWS from FOREIGN JOURNALISTS.

"Hu spread malicious rumours, libel and instigation in an attempt to subvert the state's political and socialist systems," it said.

The Xinhua article also claimed Mr Hu had been given a lenient sentence because he had confessed to his crimes.

But Nicholas Bequelin, of US-based Human Rights Watch, said Mr Hu's arrest, conviction and sentence was POLITICALLY MOTIVATED.

"The jailing of China's leading human rights activist reflects a further hardening of Beijing's stance towards dissent in the lead up to the Games," he said.

He also criticised the International Olympic Committee, which is currently meeting in Beijing, for NOT SPEAKING OUT about the human rights situation in China. "

I will not forget the political gag that China has upon its mouth. I refuse to collaborate.

										<div>" A group of astronauts will never forget the day they flew right through a cloud of auroras."

Explanation: A background of distant stars, sinuous and spiky bands of Southern Lights (Aurora Australis), and the faint glow of charged plasma (ionized atomic gas) surrounding the Space Shuttle Discovery's engines give this photo from the STS-39 mission an eerie, otherworldly look.

This image reflects Discovery's April 1991 mission well - its payload bay (PLB) was filled with instruments designed to study celestial objects, aurora and atmospheric phenomena, and the low Earth orbit environment around the PLB itself. The aurora seen here are at a height of about 50-80 miles. Aurora are caused by charged particles in the solar wind, channeled through the Earth's magnetic field which excite molecules in the upper atmosphere.

Aurora Borealis as seen from the International Space Station (2/1/08)

    </a>
										<div>" When auroras flare up, a great place to be is Earth orbit. Here is the view from the International Space Station (ISS), 200 miles high.

Crewmembers took the picture during a mild geomagnetic storm on Feb. 1st. At the time, the ISS was orbiting over the Bay of St. Lawrence and the camera (a Nikon D2Xs) pointing north with a view of Quebec and Newfoundland.

Although the auroras appear to be below the ISS, they are in fact at about the same altitude. Indeed, from time to time, the space station flies right through the Northern Lights--an indescribable experience according to astronauts who have been there:

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/08jul_underfoot.htm

Will they experience the indescribable this weekend? A solar wind stream is again buffeting Earth's magnetic field and this could result in a lovely show for the combined crews of the ISS and space shuttle Atlantis. Stay tuned!"

										<div>"This morning, the Moon passed in front of the Sun, off-center, producing a partial solar eclipse visible from Antarctica, Zew Zealand and parts of Australia. "

"This is the view through my Coronado PST at maximum eclipse," says photographer Andy Dodson of Hirangi, New Zealand. As beautiful as it was "my neighbor's daughter enjoyed our 'tin man' even more. We poked holes in a little man fashioned from aluminum foil and his eyes projected two images of the eclipse in progress."

										<div>The energy feels good to me...but I can't tell you exactly how or why or for how long.
They sure are pretty together in the sky, of that I am certain.

"Geometry has never been so lovely. On Monday morning, Feb. 4th, a splendid celestial triangle will beam through the rosy glow of dawn.
"Here they are hot off the camera," says Tunç Tezel who caught Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon in scalene formation over Turkey just hours ago."

    </a>
										<div>" A solar wind stream hit Earth on Jan. 31st and at the moment of impact scientists in Norway launched a rocket into the aurora borealis. "

"The solar wind hit perfectly during our launch window," reports Tero Raita from the Andoya Rocket Range where the skies turned vivid green:"

"The team's HotPay2 sounding rocket carried nine scientific instruments 340 km high to study the aurora-forming physics and chemistry of Earth's high atmosphere.

The launch was a success, with "a nice auroral arc right in the path of the rocket," says Raita.

Sky watchers from Scandinavia to Alaska should be alert for more auroras tonight. The solar wind stream continues to buffet Earth's magnetic field and it is causing geomagnetic storms."

    </a>
										<div>The pure unadulterated beauty cannot be denied.

"Comet McNaught was perhaps the most photogenic comet of our time.

After making quite a show in the northern hemisphere in early January '07, the comet moved south and developed a long and unusual dust tail that *dazzled* southern hemisphere observers.

In this image, Comet McNaught was captured one year ago above Chile. The bright comet dominates on the left while part of its magnificent tail spreads across the entire picture.

From this vantage point in the Andes Mountains, one looks up toward Comet McNaught and a magnificent sky, across at a crescent moon, and down on clouds, atmospheric haze, and the city lights of Santiago. Comet McNaught has glided into the outer Solar System and is now only visible as a speck in a large telescope. The other spectacular comet of 2007, Comet Holmes, has also faded from easy View"
