Sometimes I look at the future and get a little scared. Of course there's the Iraq War, global warming, the idea of a republican president in democrat's clothing, the Hayward Fault collapsing, and all the other calamity and pitfalls. But mostly I'm worried about my career. I work soooooooo fucking hard at my dissertation and teaching at three schools and I wonder if I'm going to be teaching part-time at several schools forever. I'm a very good teacher, I put a lot of effort into my teaching a... read more

Blogging is an interesting process. Sometimes I have a ton on my mind, and other times I have nothing to say to share with the Internet. Anyway, Kim had surgery last week. She had her plates and screws taken out of her knee. In the long run it should help but right now it's stressful, for her and for me. Kaiser is being a mixed bag, as usual. Some days they are tolerable, other days they completely fuck up.

My classes start this week and so far I love them. The CSU East Bay class doesn't ... read more

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, my cat and companion for sixteen years, died from complications stemming from a weak heart and blood clots. I'll spare you the details of his death but he experienced relatively little pain and the decision to euthanize him (sorry I don't use euphemisms) was failry easy. I miss him but I'm good at grief so I'm okay feeling sad about it for now.

We hooked up in 1991 in Santa Cruz. I was renting an in-law studio and the family in the front house had a cat that h... read more

Well, it's early July and it's been ages since I've posted anything worthwhile. Of course, I don't guarantee that this is anything worthwhile but it's a start. I finished up at De Anza and I'm off there until fall. The end of quarters and semesters are always difficult for me, between grading, driving, and life. Now I just have CSUEB for the summer. I'm teaching two classes-- social inequality and research methods. My first couple weeks have been quite a trip but I love it! I guess I assigned... read more

about me
Graduated Albany High School in '81 but hung out in Berkeley a lot in the late '70s and early '80s. I often hung out in Ho Chi Minh Park and The Ren, but I also worked at Au Coquelet and the Melting Pot. Later became involved in the Anti-Apartheid movement at UCB. Left Berkeley in '87 to move to Santa Cruz, where I did more political action around nuclear weapons, bartended and played darts at the Poet and Patriot Irish Pub, practiced massage for a couple years, met some amazing people, and attended Cabrillo College and UC Santa Cruz. Then to UMass-Amherst for grad school in 1998, where I'm still doing my PhD in Sociology. The most eventful thing that happened in Amherst is I married my life partner, Kim, who lived in San Francisco at the time, in 2001. She got promoted at her old job in Walnut Creek so we moved back to Berkeley in 2002 and still looking for old friends. I teach Sociology at De Anza College in Cupertino (long commute) and Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. Happily married for almost six years.
