The new project I'm involved in is called Open Flame Dance Theater, combining contemporary dance with fire. It's very exciting - we think it will raise the bar for fire performance as we know it, as well as add some innovation to the world of modern dance. The best of both worlds! We are fully permitted and each carry liability insurance, and we have non-profit status under Allied Arts. We are just getting started and have run into our first major hurdle, which is of course, you guessed it, venue. This is where you come in, you tribe networking sluts! Our ideal venue would be fairly central to Seattle proper and would seat 75-150 people. Other requirements: appropriate power supply to handle high voltage sound and lighting equipment. Must allow staging buildout if they don't already have adequate staging. Must be available for five consecutive days (2 technical rehearsals and three shows.) Our ideal dates are (in order of preference:) May 12-17 May 5-10 June 2-7 July 7-12 Places we have already tried and have ruled out for one reason or another: 1. CHAC 2. Langston Hughes 3. Little Red Studio 4. Columbia City Theater 5. Youngstown 6. Anything in Oddfellows Hall 7. Broadway Performance Hall 8. Theater Off Jackson 9. Seattle Center (all spaces) 10. Magnuson Park- one space may work but it would require complete build-out. Auditorium may work, but we're not sure if it's fire approved and it seats 450 (too big?). We are also currently looking into: old Rainier brewery, Hale's Palladium, Studio Seven, Showbox and Showbox Sodo. Basically this executive order (yes, already signed and implemented a week ago) states that if the state believes a person is or even knows a person who opposes the war or the Bush administration's plan to rebuild it, and has supported that belief with any sort of donation or affiliation with an organization known to work against the administration, including any kind of direct action protest that can be construed as "violence," they can legally search your person and your property and seize all of your assets if they want. Goodbye, Bill of Rights! And yes, to me it sound like you can be in trouble just for knowing somebody who falls into this category. Ya'll know I'm not that into politics but this is getting downright ridiculous. Please tell me if I'm interpreting this incorrectly because I really hope that I am. And did anyone hear about this before it happened? If Samba do Sol had been the highlight of my performance career until now, I think I just topped it. Performing with my best friend backed by amazingly talented musicians releasing their first full-length recording together, was an all-time high for me. I did most of the choreography and costuming in only a month (with some help from little miss 'dilla) and it was a lot of work and challenging but sooo worth it. I wish Emilia all the success in the world, and I hope we'll have the chance to share the stage with her again. Thanks to all my friends who came out and supported us. And thanks to Ms. Fire for taking such awesome photos and uploading them so quickly. -edie

Spinergy with Emilia at High Dive - this Friday!

So, my friend and fellow Spinergy member Emilia happens to be not only a kick-ass firespinner and all-around sweet person, but also a brilliant singer/songwriter, and not of the angst-ridden, acoustic guitar on knee, garden variety open-mic night type. She actually crafts really beautiful songs, from downtempo/ambient electronica to... I dunno... either way I want to describe it sounds kinda weird; rocky pop? poppy rock? And a little bit of latin and middle eastern influence in there somewhere, methinks. She's backed onstage by superstar drummer K.J. Sawka and Kent Halvorsen of Sky Cries Mary on keyboards, if that tells you anything, and her guitarist is pretty hot too. She's releasing her first full-length album on Friday, July 13th and Kysa and I will be joining her onstage that evening at the High Dive to celebrate. We've got some pretty hot hip-hop/raver-jazz go-go firedancing lined up, and it should be an amazing show. I'm pretty excited to be sharing the stage with such talented muscians, doing what I love to do. This is, as they say at the Fair, an essential event! The show starts at around ten, and we're doing three songs including the very first one, so if you don't wanna miss it get there early. Take my bike to the playa! I'm not going this year, and my bike has gone every year that I've gone (since 2001.) She's a crusier style, dark pink, not much to look at, but she has a lot of personality and she's very reliable. I got a new gel seat for her last year. She's been in the poolhouse all winter and got a little rusty, could probably use a little lube job. She comes with front and back baskets, stickers, embellishments and a squeaky frog horn. It's kind of hard to see her in this photo but if you are interested I can take better pics. I think if would be really cool if my bike could still go and have lots of crazy adventures even though I'm here at home. All I ask is that you take a couple of pictures of her kickin' it in BRC.

Life can be just as ironic and twisted as any bestseller. Many years ago, my good friend and housemate's oldest brother and his first wife were in a car wreck, wrapped around a utility pole in rural Montana, just miles from their home. He was smart enough to get out of the car without getting electrocuted, and was guiding his 19 year old wife to safety; she almost made it when her purse caught the seat belt strap and he watched her die while waiting for the ambulance. His mother saw the black smoke from her front porch, and knew that it was her son - gone to meeting early (Jehovah's Witness) because she had forgotten to remind him to set his clock back the night before. Nine marriages later, this past weekend, he was riding his motorcycle with his current wife, who followed on her own bike, when he lost control and crashed into a ditch, again mere miles from home. This time his wife walked away from the scene while he was gone before the helicopter reached the hospital. My friend has been thinking about her brother constantly the last few months. Hours before she got the phone call we were listening to her tell stories about him. She told us a few weeks ago that she had a feeling either he or her father would be dead soon. She borrowed a couple grand from him to pay back taxes so she could start her business. At the time he told her he had been planning to buy a new motorcycle with that money but instead he would help her out. I remember her telling us that she thought she had saved his life by doing that, that he would have died if he had gotten that new bike. Pretty creepy. Count your blessings, folks. And please be careful bikers! We love you!
