Chapter 3 - Sleuthing: A Primer

<div>From "Nancy Drew's Guide to Life" by Jennifer Worick

When searching for important clues, anything labeled "top secret" might be a good place to start. "The Crooked Banister"

Spend time at the gym to build upper body strength. Detective work may require fending off a vicious hair pulling. "The Thirteenth Pearl"

Being able to throw your voice can get your unskilled assistants out of tight jams. "The Ringmaster's Secret"

When confused, sit back and try to arrange the facts into some kind of order. "The Ghost of Blackwood Hall

Don't release a runaway circus animal without some type of identification from the claimant. "The Mystery at the Moss-Covered Mansion

And of course,

Never sleuth on an empty stomach. "The Hidden Staircase"

That chapter wasn't quite as interesting, but the next one is a real doozy: "The Delicate Art of Etiquette."

Some Practical Advice...

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/54cce22f-de50-4a8b-b228-45b60e4cabdb/blog/771406e1-11dd-43b5-8687-eb9ea774e16d"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/12d/217/12d21763-b9cb-448e-9199-2cdf6a2478cc.thumb" width="53" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>When I first learned to read, one of my fondest memories was of following Nancy Drew's countless adventures investigating paranormal phenomena, trailing suspicious-looking and therefore clearly criminal characters, following a convoluted trail of ridiculously random clues, and humoring her sixth sense which she liked to call "a hunch," all of which inevitably lead to the triumphant vanquishing of evildoers.

She also had tons of good-looking boys falling all over her, had a fabulous car, and was always lunching on something delicious, usually at a picnic with said boys. What a fabulous role model for an eight-year old! She had style, brains, personality and some kind of shield of invincibility around her that never let her lose a case.

I don't think I ever owned the complete collection, but my mom still has a cardboard box with about 35 of the books in it. I asked her to send it to me, but she said it would be too expensive. Last time I was home though I grabbed one - one of my favorites and number 2 in the series: "The Hidden Staircase."

My roomate stumbled across what she thought at first was a miniature version of that book, because the cover art was exactly the same. What it actually is is a compilation of "tips" quoted from the original series, called, "Nancy Drew's Guide to Life," by Jennifer Worick.

I'm going to pick out my favorites from each chapter and share them with you.

Chapter One: Survival Strategies

"In the event of a carjacking, try to steer the vehicle toward the house of an off-duty state trooper or police officer. Of course, it helps to know where the aforementioned officer of the law resides." -From "The Scarlet Slipper Mystery"

"Cover your face immediately when confronted with an explosion. Obviously, it is good to avoid explosions in general." -From "The Mystery of the Fire Dragon"

"If you hear the telltale sounds of a helicopter, step away from a blaze in the fireplace. The copter might send a downdraft into the chimney and shower sparks all over your sleek coif." From "The Mystery of the 99 Steps."

"When pinned down by a large canine, instruct friends, family, even random passersby to turn a hose on the beast." From "The Mysterious Mannequin"

"If you lack backup when you happen upon crooks caught in the act, disguise your voice and pretend to be the police. If that fails to produce the desired result, throw a stone through a window to feign a gunshot." From "The Sign of the Twisted Candles."

Stay tuned for more sage advice from Chapter 2: Dating: A Primer</div>

<div>Hi friends - we need a couple volunteers to guard our fuel dump during our tech and dress rehearsals. This is not the most glamorous job but it's also not super stressful or demanding. We need somebody to be available and at the theater from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, and/or from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday. You won't necessarily have to be sitting there the whole five hours. If you or anyone you know might be able to help on one or both evenings please let me know asap! Thank you,

An Update from Open Flame Dance Theater

<div>Dear Friends of OFDT,

Well there's lots of exciting stuff happening with Open Flame Dance Theater. We're just six weeks away from our world premier performance, Ignition, at the Magnuson Park Auditorium on August 1st and 2nd at 8pm. It's not very often you get to see the birth of a new art form. Ignition is the first time full performance of modern dance infused with fire. It's beautiful and heart-stopping and mesmerizing all at the same time.

You can finally purchase your tickets! Invite all your friends and make an evening out of it. Tickets are on sale at Brown Paper Tickets. http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/35272

THANK YOU to those of you who attended, donated to, and volunteered at our benefit, Accelerant, on June 1st. We had a blast and raised $1,200 for our show. Holy Smokes that's awesome! We can't wait to show you what your gift will help make possible. If you haven't received your personal thank you by now, please let me know. I tried to send a note to everyone, but may not have sent it to the correct contact.

Speaking of gifts, if you've already made a gift: Thank You! If you've made a pledge or have been intending to make a gift, please do so today. We still need over $1,500 to make this performance a reality and time is getting short. Even if you can only give $5, that still makes a huge difference to us. If you want to make a donation, please contact me or mail your gift directly to:
Allied Arts/ OFDT
1620 43rd Ave. East, #16A
Seattle, WA 98112

And finally, keep your eyes open for our posters and our name in the media. This performance is already generating a lot of interest, thanks in large part to your wonderful support.

See you at the show!

Warmly,

<div>The new project I'm involved in is called Open Flame Dance Theater, combining contemporary dance with fire. It's very exciting - we think it will raise the bar for fire performance as we know it, as well as add some innovation to the world of modern dance. The best of both worlds! We are fully permitted and each carry liability insurance, and we have non-profit status under Allied Arts. We are just getting started and have run into our first major hurdle, which is of course, you guessed it, venue. This is where you come in, you tribe networking sluts!

Our ideal venue would be fairly central to Seattle proper and would seat 75-150 people.

Other requirements: appropriate power supply to handle high voltage sound and lighting equipment. Must allow staging buildout if they don't already have adequate staging. Must be available for five consecutive days (2 technical rehearsals and three shows.) Our ideal dates are (in order of preference:)

May 12-17
May 5-10
June 2-7
July 7-12

Places we have already tried and have ruled out for one reason or another:

1. CHAC
2. Langston Hughes
3. Little Red Studio
4. Columbia City Theater
5. Youngstown
6. Anything in Oddfellows Hall
7. Broadway Performance Hall
8. Theater Off Jackson
9. Seattle Center (all spaces)
10. Magnuson Park- one space may work but it would require complete build-out. Auditorium may work, but we're not sure if it's fire approved and it seats 450 (too big?).

We are also currently looking into: old Rainier brewery, Hale's Palladium, Studio Seven, Showbox and Showbox Sodo.

Please keep your eyes and ears open for us and let me know if you find any leads or have any other questions! Soon we will have a website to direct folks to also.

Thank you!

<div>So a lot of you have probably seen this already, and I feel kind of bad spreading it because I can anticipate this young woman's self esteem withering away to nothing as billions of people laugh at her stupidity all across the world, and it's too funny not to share. Hopefully she'll take it as a learning experience...

<div>I found this on the wall of the Sunset Tavern in Ballard last night, big black type on a piece of plain white 8 and 1/2 x 11 paper. There were a bunch of photocopies of it by the front door so I took a couple, and I can make more copies and post them around.

<div>Basically this executive order (yes, already signed and implemented a week ago) states that if the state believes a person is or even knows a person who opposes the war or the Bush administration's plan to rebuild it, and has supported that belief with any sort of donation or affiliation with an organization known to work against the administration, including any kind of direct action protest that can be construed as "violence," they can legally search your person and your property and seize all of your assets if they want. Goodbye, Bill of Rights! And yes, to me it sound like you can be in trouble just for knowing somebody who falls into this category. Ya'll know I'm not that into politics but this is getting downright ridiculous. Please tell me if I'm interpreting this incorrectly because I really hope that I am. And did anyone hear about this before it happened? Where are the supposed "checks and balances" built into our constitution?

<div>This joke came into my WORK email inbox this morning (for my boss whose mail gets forwarded to me 'cause he never reads it) titled "Possibly the Best Chicken Joke Ever":

A chicken and an egg were lying in bed. The chicken is leaning
against the headboard smoking a cigarette, with a smile on his face.

The egg, looking a bit perturbed, grabs the sheet, rolls over, and
says, "Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question."
