Exploring the Electromagnetic Spectrum with Imaging Technology

Playing with lightning is fun, but it doesn't pay the bills. Austin Richards (aka Dr. Megavolt) has had a 30-year romance with the science of imaging with invisible light that started with an episode of Scooby Do, Where are You (the original series from 1969) and has led to a career in infrared imaging.

The human eye is a chemical system operating close to room temperature, and therefore is very limited in the range of colors it can perceive; typically only about 1 octave in wavelength. Starting in the 20th century, electronic imaging sensors have opened up the electromagnetic spectrum and enable us to image in over 60 octaves in wavelength! An incredible variety of interesting phenomena are now accessible, including seeing through all types of weather, imaging the insides of people, concrete slabs and mummies, detecting invisible gas leaks and finding hidden patterns on butterfly wings.

Tonight's presentation is a visual tour through the entire spectrum of light, from radio waves to gamma rays, and is a companion to Austin's book Alien Vision: Exploring the Electromagnetic Spectrum with Imaging Technology (SPIE Optical Engineering Press, 2001), an illustrated non-fiction science book for the layperson that gives an overview of electronic imaging technology for invisible light. Austin is a senior research scientist at FLIR Systems, a multinational commercial and military infrared sensor manufacturer. He holds a PhD. in Astrophysics from UC Berkeley and has been a research fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he worked in nuclear and particle physics. He currently teaches a class on digital imaging in the graduate division at the Brooks Institute of Photography.

The entrance and hallways of the Fishbon Pescadrome will be given the very cool BAMBOO WEAVE treatment that Gerard and company pioneered at this year's Coachella Festival. It's a freeform construction technique using 20 foot bamboo strips woven together ramdomly to create amazing textures. At this Wednesday's Fishbon Event Lab we'll be creating a weave from the front entrance all the way to the top lounge level. Come learn how to weave and help create the strong central core of FISHBON WILDEBEASTS, the next mainstage, 3 level Pescadrome extravaganza, on June 6th & 7th.

What goes on on those Private Islands in Second Life? All sorts of things. Some are corporate (IBM has six) and some are wild and crazy. This Wednesday we'll be taking a voyeur's tour of Cora's own Erotic Playground. We'll begin with a demonstration of the workings and wonders of Second Life, showing you how to create objects and designs all in a beautifully rendered 3D world. Then we'll jet to a simultaneous party held on the Isle of Thera, a completely interactive Second Life experience. So please feel free to bring your laptop and log in, taxi service available by in world instant message to either Isabelle Kessel or Beatrix Wolfenhaut.
