Is the answer to my woes - Hula Hooping?

   Wed, July 30, 2008 - 1:13 AM
OK, I have real trouble with spinning and any fast turns and to be honest do not find it fun in practising spotting or just trying to get use to the feeling I'm gonna puke my guts up or faint when I stop. It's just no fun!

SO.. I'm thinking about taking up hooping. It looks like fun, increases fitness and hopefully will help me with my spinning issues.

My only concern is the initial layout for a hoop. Looking into it, I would need at least a 44" hoop as I am a BIG girl. So it look likes £30 to £42 for my first hoop, which leads me to the next issue. Will my size cause issues with me hooping? I have large cans (FF cup) and have yet to see a video of a plus size lady or a bigboobed hooper hooping. Do any of you hoop and what would your theory be about bigboobed Hoopers?????

Also should I buy a weighted one?

Someone Please help me!!!!!!!!!!

Big Boobed Hoopers? Sounds like something that escaped from the RSPB!!

Connie has the same problem with spinning ... I'm told it's the same basic thing as travel sickness. Not nice.
I seem to remember one dancer telling us that if she was going to perform with spins she'd always take travel sickness tablets half an hour before the performance. I suppose that's one solution but I wouldn't think it would be a good idea if you are practicing daily. Let me know if the hula hooping works!

colour me thick but how does a hula hoop help with spinning?

I must be weird, I kinda like that fuzzy brain feeling when spinning, it takes you back to doing it as a kid so much you fall down :-)

I'm not sure if hula hooping helps or not... I still can't do it! I bought my hoops (a large one) from Dominoes Toy Shop on Leicester High Street. It cost me less than £5 and it has some weight on it (not much, but it's so much cheaper than the ones online!)

Alternatively, the new Wii fit has a hula hooping game on it. But again - that's expensive and I'm skeptical.

Hey Denise,

Sin-d and I have a lot of hoops between us. Maybe we should bring a couple along to the workshop on the 18th and you can see what you think? Or ask Sin-d if she can show you before then. Bigger and heavier hoops are easier to get spinning than smaller thinner ones, but the actual diameter is often a personal preference. Generally the taller you are the bigger you wider hoop you need. It's worth trying a few to find a size that you like best.

Hope it helps with the spinning. It's sure a fun way to try :)

You don't need to spend that much on a hoop for that size. Send me a message and I'll quote you some prices that are much less than that.

That robot picture is ridiculously cute! Hooping is mad hot fun. Those were a great set of links, especially hooping.org I think that it helps with spins cause it gives you a fun way to train them.

Big boobs don't matter, it's all in the timing of the spin of the hoop (F cup myself!). You won't need over a 44" or to spend that amount - try a couple first. I'll bring my battered hoop for you to play with at camp (40 or 42") then we'll buy pretty ones from Skully : ) A weighted one will probably just get annoying, as you won't be able to do as much with it off the body. If all else fails, I'll make you one!xxx

Thanks everyone for all the advice!

Cheers Amanda for the offer of the use of your hoop! you'll have to show me how to use it as well!

I think hooping will help you with spinning, but it will take a little time. I used to get horribly dizzy, but with practice I've got over it. I can spin quite fast and long now without too much problem and when I do get dizzy I laugh!

Hoops won't cost that much, I know you can probably get a 44'' incl. delivery for about £17.There are loads of sellers, so have a look in the tribe community. Sharna Rose sells lovely hoops (she's made me a lovely one at a great price too, and she has a website, just google Sharna Rose), Scully does as well. Also don't worry about your boobs, you'll get the hang of it and you'll be able to chest hoop etc without problems. I'm a D+ and I have no problems. For the first few hoops as a beginner, you definitely want a bigger heavier hoop as they're easier to control and move slower than lighter hoops. Hope that helps :)
