What can you say about someone you have known their entire life? Katrina is good people and I am happy that I got to meet her so early on.

Well, what can I say about Katja. She is my friend, and that is a very important thing to me. I trust her, and trust her to call me on my BS. She is sexy, self assured, and has her shite together. She works the opposite of a fun house mirror: she shows me what I really am. I'm lucky to know her, and blessed to love her.

about me
I'm an office lackey by day, geek/freak/random artist type by night. Currently being held captive by two cats who demand I do their bidding, but I occasionally escape to belly dance. One of these days I'll get around to reading the books I obsessively collect, or perhaps painting and using the stuff I learned in art school. And I'll have a million bucks someday, too. ADD girl does not ever settle on one hobby to obsess over.
I started belly dancing 12 years ago, but it was off and on...so if you're counting regular classes, I've only been doing it for about 3 years total. I've studied with Sardis, Taj, Sabrina, Seyyide, Jemileh and Melina (all in the Boston area). I've taken workshops with various dancers at Pennsic (like Onça), as well as Dalia Carella, Suhaila, Kami Liddle, Tempest and Ariellah...but I missed it when Rachel Brice was here. Damnit damnit damnit. Maybe next time. Got to see the Bellydance Superstars and Bellyqueen when they came around, though. Yay. I have a bit of a tendency to get fangirly over dance, literary or art heroes (of which there are many) but I'm harmless, really. I also have a problem with searching YouTube for dancing videos, and have been amused, horrified, and in total awe, in turns. (The problem is I stay up waaay past my bedtime clicking through) One of these days, in an effort to combine several interests, I'm going to create my belly dance tarot deck, illustrating it with as many of my dance idols and friends as I can.

So I just thought I'd mention that after the Arisia (science fiction convention) belly dance show this year, I had two friends make noises at me about maybe bringing that show to other science fiction conventions. Since one of those cons is in NYC and the other in western Mass, I explained that the dancers were not *mine* and I couldn't very well inconvenience them by making them drive all over the eastern seaboard...and besides, if I don't know the con, I can't really gauge what will go over...

A couple weeks ago I got to workshops with Rachel Brice and Jillina, and then the BDSS show, sort of hoping it would inspire me a bit for my upcoming performance. So glad I got to meet them, and the show was amazing, but it wasn't helping me think of stuff to do for a gothic belly dance piece. I loved the song, but it was too long and I wasn't happy with what was coming out.

It's a Sunday before a holiday. In the summer. There's nothing to do. You could, however, come watch some darkly dramatic belly dancing done to gothic and metal music at Shimmy in the Shadows. This Sunday July 1, 2:30-5:30 in Arlington's Regent Underground Theater (7 Medford St), there's a hafla with many dancers you don't want to miss--seeing Aepril Schaile dance is an experience not unlike watching someone do a ritual summoning up a goddess to pos... read more
Yesterday I had a couple belly dancers over to rehearse for an upcoming show...and after they left, Carlos and I walked down the stairs, and he pointed out that the steps had a fine dusting of glitter that they hadn't had a few hours previous.

We weren't even in costume or made up to perform! Man, we'd make terrible stealth fighters. ;)
Saturday's Shimmies for a Cure hafli was great--I'm sorry I didn't make it to more of the workshops, now. And the show was a great lineup. The entire second half of the hafli was full of "Holy crap!" performances. Nikki, as ever, is inspirational and fun to watch, Aepril takes goth bellydance to artistic levels I wouldn't have conceived of (damn, that was cool, the Morrigan veil thing), Nadira makes me want to study gesture, and Sabrina gave one of her best performances ever (and that's sayin...
